Potty help

I'm doing diaper free time with DS here and there. He has Peed on the toilet quite a few times in the morning right after waking. He is an early bird so sometimes it's hard for me to make it out of bed in time to get him there lol.

Anywho, last night he was in the tub, and he really loves water, so he is in there as soon as I start filling it and he stays in there until all the water is drained. Once it was last night, he squatted down, and was pushing! He peed, just a little bit, stuck his hand in it and started splashing around lol. I took him out, put him on the toilet, but nothing happened.

Today he is doing the same thing. He's squatting down, pushing, and just a little tiny bit is coming out and when I put him on the toilet nothing is happening. Yes, this is frustrating, but I'm NOT angry, and not showing him that I'm frustrated. He is well hydrated. I guess he thinks pee is fun to play with? He wears a diaper 90% of the time. When he pees on the floor, I put him on the potty and say "pee in the potty". Should I say or do something different? Wait longer to get him out of diapers? Start doing it regularly? Any help would really be appreciated! TIA

Re: Potty help

  • This might not be what you want to hear but he's only 1!  My only advice for you is to be patient.  DS1 didn't get the hang of it until he was 3 1/2 and I'm going to try with DS2 in December...he'll be 2 3/4. Somebody else with early potty training experience might be able to give you advice but just remember that all kids are different and will learn on their own time.  Just getting experience sitting on the potty at that age is great.  Don't expect much more and definitely try not to get frustrated.  Good luck!

  • What mjcleve said. We "started" multiple times but when it became clear that DS wasn't ready we hung it up and tried again a few months later each time. Eventually he was ready and everything clicked. It's easy to get excited when you see that they are starting to notice their own plumbing but it can be a long time from really learning to go potty.
