Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Head Banging?

Does anyone else's LO bang their head willingly? My 10.5 month old DD sometimes will go up to the glass railing and just start banging her head on it.  I've read that it is normal for babies to do this but just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?

Re: Head Banging?

  • DS likes to bounce his head against everything, especially the couch cushions and the back of his high chair. He also likes to bump his head against the patio door.

I think it's just another way of exploring sensation and physical limits and is nothing to be concerned over unless LO is injuring him/herself or the behavior becomes a compulsion.

  • My DD hits her head with her hand sometimes.  It makes me nervous with Autism, but she is pretty social.  So IDK.  I am going to bring it up at her 12 mos appt.

  • Yes, I read in the "What to Expect: the First Year" It was normal, and to try and give LO a rythmic toy to help.  So he has a tambourine, and we encourage drumming.  Seems to have helped...it also said to hold and rock them more. We're doing that too.

  • My son does this every now and again.  Mostly he likes to throw his head back against the wall.

  • Like you said it is normal and today, DH and I were told that they do it to release tension, like when they grind their teeth. Kohan does it against the couch, his crib and wall. Sometimes the computer desk or floor, ugh it drives dad and I batty!

  • Totally normal. L does it, and he loves banging his head on mine too (joy).  My nieces and nephews did the same thing.

  • one of our girls has been doing this a ton. I'll watch her in her crib sometimes just wacking her head against the mattress over and over. I'm glad to hear this is common...I was a little worried my daughter was losing it!

  • Yep. Maesyn loves the back of the headboard before bed and cracks up laughing every time.
