Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Crib bumper question.

One of my girls is chewing on her crib like crazy!!  I put the railing guard over the tops railings of the crib but she lays on her side and chews on the other parts of the crib now.  I hate that she is gnawing at her crib and chipping away at the finish, and probably swallowing it.  Is it ok to put the crib bumpers back in there at this point??  I am so very paranoid about sids, but I would think being almost 10 months old that threat is very slim.  What do you all think??

Re: Crib bumper question.

  • Ds is 10 mnths on the 15 th and he has had his bumper the whole time never a problem.

  • It is a personal comfort decision, but I've used a bumper since 6 months with both my girls.

  • I still haven't put a bumper in DS's crib. I feel like he'd try to use it to boost his way outta there. Kids chew on cribs. DS's has chipmunk marks all down the rails. My parents' headboard was like that my whole childhood from me as an infant.

We also have a bumber.. if your LO is chewing on lower rails ( the gummy protection should work on rails too...would just need more of it I would think)

  • DD will be 10 months tomorrow and we have used a bumper since she was born. (Well I kept the one front long bumper off for a couple months until she started getting limbs stuck then I put that one on too)

I know the SIDS possibility is incredibly rare above 9 months, it does happen but it's unusual. Generally because by now sleep apnea isn't as big an issue, same with the CO2 level thing (can *apparently* build up with bumpers because of the lack of air flow) because they're breathing is much stronger, and by now they will move their faces if they have a hard time breathing because something is in their way. Your biggest concern would be when she starts to climb on them, she could maneuver her way high enough to fall out and that's when you should take all bumpers out of the crib.

  • My girls are a little over 9 months and we just recently put the bumpers back on because they were rocking and bashing their heads a ton. I worry about SIDS too but i'm also worried about them hurting themselves so I dont know ther right answer but so far we've had no problems having them back on. Plus w/ the video monitor I feel pretty comfortable.

  • I just put bumpers back in DD's crib this week.  She's starting to bang her head on the side and I wanted something soft and cushy... so weird!  She also likes rolling over onto her side or scooting her head up to the top of the mattress and I didn't want to add in extra blankets or pillows.  She seems fine.  I was actually nervous that she'd play with it instead of sleeping, which hasn't happened yet.
