One of the things DD wants for Christmas is the hot Doc McStuffins toy. I have to admit, it looks pretty cool when you read all it can do.

Problem: DS likes Doc McStuffins too. I know he would be enamored of this toy. The toy is not something that will be in DD's Santa stuff as that bag is full. DS has some room so possible for him. Mainly I was thinking of it on the list for relatives to buy. I haven't gotten anything for either kid yet so we could get it jointly for them both and I have spending power from my parents who are writing a check and could get 2.
Personally, I think it is ridiculous to get 2 $40 toys. I get having two of bikes and stuff but this is something they could take turns or play with together. WWYD? Just get one and have it be a joint gift or buy 2 or buy none and see where the chips fall. DD is better with her toys but she is also 5 versus 3 and can cool on a toy quickly as well.
Thoughts? TIA!
ETA: ah, there is a $20 one that is smaller pieces but still cool and that might be an option for whichever doesn't get the one. Sweet!

I'll take a different approach- buy the doc mcstuffins dr kit on amazon. the kids can play with it together/simultaneously, on each other, you, their dolls, etc.
I have b/g twins so I get the buy 1 or 2 thing... I very rarely buy 2 of things for my kids even if I know that the other one might like it (other than things like you said- bikes, etc)...if one of them is into something, they get it and if the other wants to play with it too, cool, they have to share. If they are both 'asking' for that thing or are really into that thing I would buy 2 but it comes up infrequently at our house & doesn't sound like that is the case from your post?. DD loves doc mcs & DS watches along with her but it is rarely his show choice when it is his turn. He'd play w/ it too if we had the toy but I wouldn't buy two just b/c he will also be interested in it. If that were the case I'd have 2 of almost everything in my house, as they play w/ a lot of the same stuff.
Just my .02.
ETA- just re-read. Are the 2 options either buy two or buy one and give it to DS technically even though Dd is the one asking for it? I definitely wouldn't do that- at 5 yrs old I would anticipate a big time meltdown over that, at least at my house... I vote joint gift over giving something to him that she has specially asked for. Also I love the dr kit but if she is specifically asking for this particular set then I'd figure out some way to give that to her if you buy it at all.
