VBAC

Should I try for a VBAC after failure to progress?

I had pre-e with DD and was induced at 37 weeks.  I went in with zero dilation.  They used the balloon thing which got me to 3cm.  The dr then broke my water and they slowly increased pitocin (I already had the epidural before he broke my water).  About 12 hours after he broke my water, I started vomiting and hoped that meant I had progressed.  Nope.  I was still at 3.  I went for the c/s.

I always thought it was because I was only 37 weeks and my body just wasn't ready to deliver.

I am pregnant again and haven't met with my doctor yet.  But the nurse said that he would most likely recommend a RCS since I never progressed past 3.  And even that wasn't natural progression, he got me there with the balloon procedure.

Has anyone else had success with VBAC after failure to progress?

  • Your situation sounds so similar to mine!

I was induced with DD at 38 weeks for borderline pre-e. (I had extremely high bp that I was on medication 3x/day for. I had just started getting protein in my urine and was getting dizzy/seeing spots a lot so my Dr said no more)

I went in to be induced and wasn't dilated. Spent 36 hours in labor and only progressed to 3cm. Ended up with a c/s.

I'm hoping to vbac with the next baby. We found an extremely pro vbac dr. I'm hoping that as long as I don't have issues with my BP this time that I can go to 40 weeks and go into labor on my own. I know the only reason I didn't progress was because my body wasn't ready yet.

I would talk to your Dr. Let them know you want a chance to try and vbac. Failure to progress is not a good reason (to me) not to try or a vbac! GL OP!

  • Seels, that does sound similar.  The only thing my dr said after the c/s was that I could have been in labor for days and still ended up with a c/s, but he didn't explain that.  I don't know if he's guessing or if he actually saw that I have a narrow pelvis or what.

PinkLily, that is VERY encouraging to hear!  I'm so glad you got your VBAC!  I would really like to try for it, but it's pretty scary to me.  I would love to read your story!  Thanks!

  • My doctor told me if you don't get a chance to labor for whatever reason, breech, failure to progress, that you are actually a great candidate because you never had a chance to push and they have no idea how you would do during this stage. Good luck!

  • Induction and c/s only 12 hours later... yeah, that's not really failure to progress. It's failure of the doctor's patience to wait. Or perhaps your "failure" to be a textbook example of the labor curve. (the labor curve charts are 14 hours long and basically tell them how far along you "should" be at a certain hour into labor)

I had a 3 day induction - 2 days on cervidil, 1 day on pitocin. 15 hours later I had a c/s which I feel was done so my OB could get home at a decent hour.

For my vbac, my OB did say that it was not a great indicator that I had not fully dilated, but he saw no downside in trying. 29 hours of labor (not induced, started naturally 9 days late) and I had a successful vbac. I did in fact stall out again and did not progress for hours on end. My OB's response was to try to figure out the baby's position and the best position for me to be in to help baby out and to order nipple stim to increase the contractions. And with some patience, labor started to progress again and eventually my slow-poke body did what it was trying to do.

  • Try for a VBAC and get a new provider! It sounds like your body wasn't ready for labor, especially if Pitocin didn't do anything, but manually opening your cervix did.

I had FTP after 4+ hours of pushing with my first son (he was OP/malpositioned), and had a successful VBAC with my second. My MW never discouraged me from planning a VBAC.

    Good luck!

  • I had FTP with my first child.  I had a successful VBAC with my second.  It was a long labor, but everyone was patient with my body and I did it!

  • My dr said what happened last time would likely happen again and I honestly cant go through that again...My water broke 4 days before my due date..went in and was stuck at 2cm foreverrrrrr even with pitocin. Finally after what felt like a lifetime I got to the point of pushing and she still wouldn't come out..She was sunny side up..So about 33 hrs later we went to the OR. My RCS is nov 15th this time...nervous to have surgery but dont like the unknown.
