C-sections

visitors after csection

my csection is scheduled for 12:30, and I'm wondering how soon after the section I could expect to be released to my own room and visitors allowed.

I really don't remember the timing from my first csection.  My section was at 7:45, and I'm almost positive we didn't have any visitors till till maybe 10:30 or so, but my mom seems to think it was earlier.

Just trying to figure out the timing for my section next week!

Re: visitors after csection

  • I was in my own room about 1 1/2 hours after LO was born.  My mom and step-dad actually visited me while I was still in the recovery room.  DH and I were a little surprised when they walked in, especially since that area of the hospital was under construction so it wasn't easy to find the recovery room.

  • My c/s was 6:30 p.m. and I could have visitors at 8:30.

  • The nurses took DH and the baby to recovery while I got put back together.  If we wanted, visitors could be in the room then, before I got back.  It was all up to us.

All the grandparents were in recovery when I got there but they didn't hold the baby until I got a chance to hold and bf.  It took 45 min to an hour for me to get back to the room.

Again, this was our decision.  If we didn't want them in there, we could have had them wait until we were ready.

I was in recovery for about 2 hours and then they put me in my room.  Both were private - I have never shared a room in the hospital.

  • My parents were there when I came out of surgery, but I was on the table for almost 2hrs, then right into a room. There was no "recovery" room like in most hospitals. From what I remember they basically followed me into my room and DS came in soon after to start nursing since we had been separated for so long. I didn't mind at all b/c it was my parents but if it were a crew of 20 I porbably would've had an issue with it.

  • I think it all depends on the hospital and your recovery, etc. I had a scheduled c-section and DS was born at 3:33pm, it took an hour to sew me up and it was about 4:45pm before I was in my recovery room. Only 1 adult at a time was allowed in the room so DH stayed with DS and I, my right leg didn't want to wake up so it took over and hour to get any feeling and I wasn't released to my room till almost 7:30pm. Once I got into my regular room they took DS and DH to the nursery to run tests and give him his first bath, so by the time all that was done it was almost 9pm before family could really visit with us in my room.

  • My hospital has labor/delivery/recovery suites, so in theory patients are in the same room for their entire stay.  With DS, he was born around 9am, and we didn't have visitors until dinner time - this was my choice, though, had nothing to do with when I was "allowed" to have visitors.  I just didn't want people visiting while I was still cath'ed and unable to move from the spinal.

I plan to do much the same thing this time around.  We'll go in tomorrow morning for the c/s, which is scheduled for earlier but there's one surgery before mine, so who knows.  DH will be with me all day; we'll have my parents bring DS up around dinner time to visit & meet his sister.  I'm hoping that by dinner time I'll be IV and cath-free (I was w/ DS) and able to move around a little bit, and hopefully even be changed out of the hospital gown.  I don't want to "scare" DS by having him see me hooked up to a bunch of tubes/wires or in weird clothes.

  • Lo was born at about 9:30 pm on a Tuesday.  Hubby, my mom and my sister were there (Hubby in the room with me.  Ma and sis got to watch lo get cleaned off while the drs stitched me up).  My mil and step fil and my father were there within 5 minutes.  Unfortunately, no one got to hold him until later.  I don't know when they all left; I passed out and didn't wake up until 2 am and demanded they wheel me to the nursery to see lo.

The next day, my fil was there at 7 am.  My folks came round 9.  And I had steady visitors until we left on Friday at noon.

  • I had an emergency c-section, so I wasn't in a "c-section" room before hand.  When it was over, they just took me back to my "labor" room...which was a little bigger than the hospital's c-section recovery rooms.  We were allowed 4 people in the labor room, so that many people were allowed back in my room during recovery.  Each hospital is different.  Had it been a planned c-section, there would've only been 2 people allowed, and only visitors after I got to my room...2 - 3 hours later (based on their presumed recovery schedule).

  • I was in my room about an hour and a half after the operation. I had MIL, SIL, FIL, SIL daughter, a cousin, and my DH all in my recovery room. I was too drugged up to let it bother me, however, if we have another kiddo I'll probably request that everyone wait until I'm in my room before visiting us after the op.

  • I was scheduled for 12:30, but DD wasn't actually born until 3:00 pm.

I had some issues in recovery.  We didn't get to my postpartum room until 8 pm.  I was not feeling up to visitors that evening.  My parents brought DS the next morning.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I was in my room after 1 hour spent in recovery. Our visitors were already in our room waiting for us :)

  • My csection was just after midnight, and I had my first visitor, my mom, there at noon. So 12 hours.

You will probably be in recovery for at least an hour, maybe more, and I imagine you'll want at least a few hours to yourself with new baby before having guests. Your surgery could also be pushed back which will change everything.
