Books-What's does AP think?

So my mom recently picked up a few things for us at a big consignment sale. She picked up two books for me, exclaiming that "these are just the best books out there; really useful. You NEED to have them."

What To Expect: The First Year

What to Expect: The Toddler Years

Thus far, through pregnancy and TTC, I've not been very impressed with the WTE books. I think they are a bit fear monguering and I've found other resources much more helpful and a better fit for my pregnancy and birth goals. So what is your take: Do you think these books are helpful? Harmful? Doesn't really make a difference? Read them with a grain of salt? Do you like other resources more?

On my own I have picked up:

The Baby Book

Positive Discipline: The First 3 Years

Simplicity Parenting

Any others you would recommend?

  • I'm not familiar with the WTE parenting books (didn't really care for the pregnancy book). I like The Discipline Book, The Baby Sleep Book, and Playful Parenting. Right now I like the Science of Parenting because I like knowing the "whys" behind theories and it talks about neurological, physiological, and psychological development. It was good when DS was an infant but it's really become useful in understanding toddler to preschooler behavior, which can be mind-boggling to say the least. It's also more of a reference book than a "read cover to cover book" which is all I have time for anyway.

  • I haven't read the parenting books, but I did read the pregnancy book.  I liked some of the pregnancy book, but I read all of that type of stuff with the grain of salt since there are so many different points of view out there.  Since you have them, I see no harm in reading them, using anything you find useful and forgetting the rest.  I don't have any suggestions for good parenting books - I find I wing it/rely on the experience of friends and family.  Oh - and you guys :)
