Trying to Get Pregnant

OPK not positive until the same day as temperature spike - confused

Hello everyone,

Apologies if this is a silly question - I've searched the boards, OPK websites and google, and can't find the answer.

This is my first month using an Ovulation Predictor Kit.  I have a regular 28 day cycle and I suspect I usually ovulate around day 14. I usually get a temperature spike on day 15 or 16.

This month, I used the OPK every morning from day 11.  On day 15, I woke up and took my temperature.  It had risen dramatically, which I thought meant that I had already ovulated.  I then headed to the bathroom and I got the OPK positive - but on the box it says that you get the OPK quite a few hours/days BEFORE you ovulate.

I thought that your temperature doesn't rise until  AFTER ovulation, and that by the time you see the spike, the egg is already gone.

How is it possible that the OPK was not positive until the morning that I had the temp spike?

I'm confused by the OPK/temperature spike issue and how to identify when I actually ovulated - it will be particularly useful to know for future cycles if this one doesn't work out.

My temp has stayed high since the rise on day 15 so I'm pretty sure that it was my usual post-ovulation temperature spike.  It's now day 20.

 Thank you!

A lot of women on here recommend using the opks twice a day. It's possible your surge hit it's peak in the late morning/afternoon of the day before the temp spike, but you missed it because you only tested once in the morning.

Exactly what I was thinking.  If you didn't test the afternoon as well, you could have missed the the +OPK from the night before and so it would look like you only got a + the morning of your temp spike.

  • Good morning. If you link your chart, we could probably help a little bit more.

    This.
I posted a similar question yesterday. I got a positive OPK on cd13-14 but from the looks of my chart I ovulated on CD13. The advise I got is the same your getting, the OPKs are really just a snapshot of your surge and you can very well still get a positive opk after O. I would also suggest testing twice a day and not with fmu. I usually test at 11am and 3pm, more if I notice they are getting dark (I will test up to 4x a day when I get really close to a positive OPK so I don't risk missing my surge).
I don't know if you wanna go back and find my post titled OPK Question (I posted yesterday so it shouldn't be too far down) I got some great advise there and I think it would help your situation as well.

  • Thank you everyone, that's very helpful!  Angel I will go back and look at your post, what a shame I missed it!

The OPK kit said test just once a day, first thing in the morning so I didn't know to test twice a day.

I guess this means that I might have accidentally missed ovulation - whoops.
