Difference btw Day 3 and Day 5 transfer?

My retrieval is scheduled for Sunday - yay!

I was wondering if a transfer is "preferred" on Day 3 or Day 5. I can't quite get an answer from my doc - he seems to dodge the question - but he said 65% of their transfers are on Day 3.  Trying to plan, and trying to figure out what to hope for.  Logistically, day 5 would be Friday, which would be ideal!

Me: 35, DH: 34, Started TTC #1 since November '11
Several Clomid/Femara rounds, then fresh IVF September '12
Fresh IVF #1: chemical pregnancy, FET #1: ectopic, methotrexate
FET #2 resulted in our amazing baby boy Levi, born on 11/3/13 at 8 lbs, 5 oz. He is our everything!

At my clinic it really depends on how many embryos you have.  If there aren't many (which there never are for me), then you do a 3dt.  If you have lots, then they continue to watch them past day 3 to see which ones "declare themselves" as the best and then do a 5dt.  The idea is that if you don't have very many embies, they want to transfer the few that you do have back to their "natural environment" on the chance that they do better in your ute than in the dish.  Other RE's only do day 5 transfers because they feel that if the embies can't make it in the dish ("perfect environment"), then they won't make it in the ute either.  All about your RE's perspective I suppose...Good luck!

I think it's mostly a matter of what your RE prefers. Here's one opinion from a Texas fertility clinic doctor.

It really depends on your doctor and their thoughts.  There are positives and negatives to both... you can lose some embryos by Day 5 that would have made it on Day 3.  But you get a better picture by Day 5 and can do a blastocyst transfer.  There is a lower risk of identical multiples (an embryo dividing) at blastocyst stage, but you run the risk of only have one to implant if you wait.

We chose to do Day 5, but it's very personal and up to you and your doctor.

Too funny!  I guess my answer should have said "at our clinic...".  Sorry that you couldn't get a straight answer from him, but he's just like that sometimes.  I was with him through a very difficult (life and death at certain points) situation, and I found it very difficult to get straight answers.  Ultimately, this is one of the (many) reasons that I switched to another doc there.  Don't get me wrong, though, you are in very capable hands, he's just difficult to communicate with sometimes...Best of luck at your retrieval on Sunday.  Everyone on staff is really wonderful and you will be well taken care of!
