So I had Mirena placed at my 6 week follow up appointment (something in my head told me to go with another option) but I ignored it and had it inserted. Things were fine but I did have heavy bleeding that lasted a while (can be totally normal) and was told at my follow up that things looked great.
I have been getting a heavy period each month and my dr said that it would eventually go away - basically that bleeding time is different for everyone and hopefully I'd be lucky to end my periods soon. Something again told me to have it removed, but I argued with myself that I needed to have more patience.
Well two weeks ago I had horrible, I mean horrible cramping. It woke me up in the middle of the night and honestly brought me back to contractions and labor pains. I felt like I needed to go to the ER. I woke up DH and we contemplated the idea, but decided I should take some Motrin and see how I felt in the morning.
In the morning I felt better but not 100% do I made a call to the OB. They had me in last week to check things out. During the exam the NP said that it looked like it was perfectly placed but would order a TV Ultrasound just to double check since the cramping was so severe.
Well that ultrasound was today and it looks like the Mirena has perforated my uterus (my biggest fear) . They want me to have a pelvic MRI done Monday to confirm. To make matters worse, I have a bleeding disorder so they think it would be best to have the removal scheduled at the hospital.
There is a slight chance they are wrong and it's okay in there - but probably not. Either way I'm having it removed. Some thoughts and prayers would be appreciated. We wanted to TTC in about a year and really hope that this doesn't make it difficult for us down the road.
Also, I don't want to cause worry to anyone with Mirena. I understand this to be rare. I'm kicking myself for not listening to my gut. Just a reminder to all if something doesn't feel right it probably isn't and do something about it!!
Thanks for reading my novel!
Re: Trust your instincts - Mirena trouble (long)
Good luck!
Good luck! I had mine taken out this week. Thankfully I didn't have the serious problems you did, but I had unpredictable bleeding/periods that varied in length and heaviness, I gained 25 lbs, and was starting to have some mental problems as well. Getting it removed was the best things I could have done. I'm currently having some problems with bleeding post-removal. I wish doctors and brochures didn't understate the potential complications & side effects. I don't consider 25 lbs to be "some weight gain," nor do I consider bleeding for 3 weeks at a time "breakthrough bleeding." Also, I was told I would "spot" for a few days after removal, not pass clots and bleed through a super tampon in a half hour.
I hope you don't have to have surgery to have it removed!
