Baby Names

Bettina?

Our last name is very German sounding. And while neither of us is necessarily tied to DH's (very watered down by this point) German heritage, there's no denying that some names seem to "match" our last name better than others.

Came across the name Bettina today and thought it was kind of pretty and unique (at least here in the U.S.). Initial reaction?

Re: Bettina?

  • It's not really my style, but I think it's nice. I think the nicknames Betty or Tina would be cute.

  • When I was growing up, there was a Bettina, but everyone called her Butt-ina. Unfortunately, that's the only association I have.

  • I don't mind it. Bettina sounds like a heroine from a romance novel set in the 19th century. It is kind of refreshing. Love the nn Betty!

  • My childhood dog was Beatina (pronounced the same). We bought her already named by her German breeder while living in Germany. I have a strong dog association just because of my experience. Otherwise, it's a nice name not my favorite German name.

  • The only Bettina I knew was kinda a hot mess, so that's the association I have... it's a pretty name, though.

  • It's not something I would use, but I kinda like it. It's unique but not made-up and you can get some cute nns from it (Betty, Tina). I have heard of it before- I remember reading it in a book when I was younger and thinking it was different but not weird.

  • It's a beautiful name, and not at all uncommon in Germany. I have known several Bettinas, all very nice people. I say go for it!

This exactly!  Except I would use nn Bette instead of Tina.  I do not like Tina because all I can think of is Napoleon Dynamite llama....eat the food Tina!!  lol!

  • Isn't Bettina the name of one of Miss Piggy and Kermit's daughters in Muppet Christmas Carol?

.....I may have seen this movie a few too many times)

  • I have a friend with this name. Before her, I'd never heard of it. My positive association has me leaning towards yes, go for it!

  • That's my name (I am German) :-)

It's a fairly common name in Germany, like Mary here in the States for example. Every time I introduce myself here in America, people pause and usually say "That's so pretty" or something similar. I have not gotten any negative feedback in the 4 years I've lived here. Sometimes people seem to make up their own version and call me Brittney, Regina, Retina, etc.

My nickname is Tine, by the way :-)

  • It sounds made up to me but only because I've never heard it before.  It's NMS, but it's ok.
  • I like it. My sister had a friend named Bettina when we were growing up. She was a very sweet girl. I think it's a great choice.

  • I really like it. It was the name of a character in Isle of Palms by Dorothea Benton Frank. Love that book, so it's a positive association for me.
