IUD?

I know that this is not an AP question, but I lurk here a lot, and you ladies are may favorite... so hopefully someone can answer my question!

I just had an IUD (Paraguard) placed on Monday, and I am still bleeding. I am wondering how long this may last...I've looked online, and I only get information about abnormal bleeding resulting in IUD removal. I am not sure if it matters, but I am about 12 weeks post-partum, and I am exclusively breastfeeding.

Re: IUD?

  • I bled for about a week, and then had on and off spotting for almost five months. Fun times.

  • I have a Mirena, so it's a little different.

Insertion at 12 weeks PP. I was still bleeding from birth, not heavily, but I wasn't in dainty little pantyliners by then.

Bled until about 15 months PP.

DS self weaned at 17 months.  Periods resumed as normal.

So it's up in the air whether it was BF or IUD related that caused me to bleed nonstop for a year.

I did get a nasty case of cervicitis, which put me in bed for a good 2 days, but no problems other than that.

  • I have Paragard and it lasted about a week for me. I've since had 3 AF cycles and the first was pretty normal, second was super light, and third was insanely heavy with awful cramps. I know those are possible side effects but am hoping it's temporary! Just mentioning FYI.

  • I have mirena so I know it's a little different but I bled for 1 week. Then off and on for the next month. After that I didn't have any bleeding until 12 mo post partum stopped BF. Hopefully you luck out and don't bleed too long. I'm sorry to the ladies who had bad experiences with IUDs!
  • I also have mirena. I had it put in about 10 or 11 weeks pp and bled fro almost 2 full months. But have not had any bleeding, not even spotting since and my dd will be 10months in 2 weeks. I am still BF so we will see how long this lasts. The 2 months was really annoying, but I am loving the lack of AF now :)

  • Also Mirena- I was told expect ALOT of spotting until 6 months post-insertion

My bleeding was delayed, but it still comes and goes, sometimes heavy, sometimes not

  • I had my paragard put in when I was on my period two months ago, and I bled for about 3 days longer then a normal period. I still spot a bit off and on but nothing I need to wear anything for. I love mine! My periods are a bit longer and heavier, but nothing I can't manage. I love that I don't have to use hormones (causes me major anxiety) yet I'm still protected from pregnancy.

I'm on my second Mirena and it may be different, but from insertion I bled on and off for about 6 weeks each time. IMO, IUDs are awesome once you adjust.

    This.

I had one put in pre-baby days and the bleeding on and off was a pain but the no periods after? AWESOME.

I will totally get the Mirena again.

  • You do realize 98 percent of mothers who EBF are infertile at least six months PP? I was unfortunately one of those rare ones in the 2 percent, but thank goodness I was already using NFP and realized I was fertile! I honestly can't imagine having an IUD inserted in me, or using synthetic steroids. Would you be okay with your SO shooting steroids to enhance performance? Are you okay with athletes pumping steroids? Probably not! So why do so many women think it is okay for them to do it?

This was not a request for opinions on if using an IUD or hormonal birth control is safe/right/whatever.

It was a request for information and anecdotal experience with IUDs.

Get off your high horse. Taking a birth control pill or getting an IUD inserted is not the same moral question as someone taking performance enhancing steroids. It's flipp'in birth control.

    Take your rant elsewhere.

Yes, NFP is great and I used it myself until wanting to get pregnant with my second. But I wouldn't dare of or dream of or care to condemn a woman for choosing another form of birth control. Thank God we have these choices available to us unlike so many woman now, and woman before us, that never had reproductive rights. SHAME ON YOU.

  • Bandwife- Thanks for your support. I decided not to even respond to BriDaily as her post seemed ignorant and uninformed (regarding the analogy between an IUD and synthetic steroids).

I have the Mirena but this is me. Bled for a week after insertion in June and I am still spotting on and off.
