Shower a Newborn?

Do you think we can shower my 3 week old? Like have my husband hold him next to the water while I wipe him down. Then gently put him in from the neck down to rinse. Maybe even put his head in for a quick second. Thinking about it...it seems like the water would be able to get to more places on him quicker and better than a bath. Am I being stupid? Thank you!

Re: Shower a Newborn?

  • I showered my newborn the week after he was born. The doctors said its ok once the umbilical cord falls off, but I just couldn't wait. They do say to sponge bathe him in the mean time.

My DS has also showered with me since 3 weeks. My husband brings him to me at the end of my shower, he likes it because he stays warm because the water is constant.
  • Definately a fine thing to do, just be careful and warn DH a wet soapy baby is VERY slippery!

  • Go for it.  I use to do it with DD to calm her down.

  • Haha, at 1st I thought you meant shower with gifts...
  • Thanks guys! :)  We just gave him a bath and he did great!  I expected him to cry like he did with his first bath...but he did great!  He just laid there!  We will definitely be doing more showers!

  • we have been showering our DD since she was 2.5 weeks or so. It's the easiest and quickest for us. I just make sure the water doesn't get too hot and she loves it!

  • Can't wait to shower our little guy, although we used a bath sometimes with DD so that family could be part of the experience, we most often took her in the shower with us. It's easier, faster, seems cleaner, etc. We started as soon as her cord fell off and to this day she still showers with Mommy when we get ready in the am. We plan on showering our new LO sometime this week, he HATES the sponge bath so I'm hoping he too will be a shower fan.
