Preemies

27 weekers... 13 months old now

My twins just turned the big ONE last month and they have been doing great.  They were born 3 months early so we definitely have a few development "delays..."  My son, not so much, but with my daughter, yes.  My son is crawling and pulling himself up on everything - even tries to let go and steady himself.  My daughter on the other hand is NOT crawling yet.  She still scoots around.  We went to a PT appt this past week and the therapist thought my daughter would not most likely walk until she was either close to 2 or a little after she turns 2.  Does anyone else out there have a preemie that did not walk until they were 2?

Re: 27 weekers... 13 months old now

  • My 26 weekers are 19mths old now. They both started crawling within a month or two of each other, but DS has been walking now for atleast 2 months. DD is not interested. She can walk and she will cruise furniture, but the has a hard time balancing to walk independently and would rather crawl.

I am not sure how long this will go on, but we know she has the skills to do it and "can" she just won't.

  • I think that is a pretty silly assumption on your PT's part.  After all, there is still 11 months until your daughter turns 2 ... That is a long ways away.  Is your daughter sitting independently?  Will she bear weight on her feet? It's also important to remember that fine motor, cognitive, social, and gross motor skills are all important and some kids progress in one area faster than in others.

Re: crawling.  Our pedi and therapists have always emphasized how important it is for my daughter to crawl before walking to help develop her upper body and core strength.  I guess different practitioners have different feelings on this since PP indicated that her providers have indicated differently. They have gone as far as to emphasize that we hold off on encouraging her standing by not getting activity tables or push toys just yet.

Big hugs!  I'm sure it is extra hard to not compare when you have 2 babies at the same age

  • hi! my 27 weekers are 13 months old now too!

I agree with a previous poster, the physical therapist may be able to guess that your daughter won't walk for awhile, but I don't think there is anyway for her to know that for sure.

My DD has always been slightly head of her adjusted age. She isn't walking on her own yet, but is really close and it will probably happen any day now. My DS has a lot more medical complications and was in the hospital for 250 days (8 months) before he came home. He has a number of developmental delays. At some points we (us and the doctors) weren't sure if he would ever be able to walk because he used to keep his legs locked completely stiff. Over time and with the help of therapies, he has now started bending his knees a lot, rolling over, and sitting up on his own. We still don't know for sure if he will ever walk, but seeing how far he has come makes me feel like he will one day even if it's not until he's 4 or 5. Who knows. Of course, I wish he was a "normally" developing baby, but after everything we have been through I am just so happy to see how far he has come and I know that he will reach milestones at his own time.

I know it's not easy, but just be patient and also try to get as many therapies for your LOs as possible. They really do make a big difference!
