XP: Electric breast pumps

Hey everyone,

I recently found out that my insurance now covers a non-hospital grade electric breast pump. I'm looking at the Medela pumps but am not sure which model to buy. Any recommendations?

I will pumping at home (or in the hospital, if the twins spend time in the NICU), but would like to have the option of pumping when I'm out, just in case. Since insurance is covering it 100%, money is not really a factor.

Thanks!

  • We have been happy with the Medela Pump In Style (w/ car adaptor and battery pack). The owner of the breastfeeding support store that sold it to us recommended it over the Freestyle - she said that she hears significantly more complaints about problems with the Freestyle.

  • Yes, I was just reading a few bad reviews of the Freestyle on Amazon. Thanks for the heads up!

Which version of the PIS do you have?

  • I have the Pump In Style Advance. Very powerful, still good 5yrs later, was worth my investment. It's certainly heavier than the FS, but I haven't had any problems packing it up and taking it around with me - it has a good sturdy shoulder strap much like a baby bag. Getting replacement parts has been no problem.

  • I rented a medela symphony last time and it was amaaaazing!  I plan to rent again since this will most likely be our last pregnancy if things go well.

I had the same one and it worked great.  I started out with the older style one in the messenger bag, but after I found out our insurance would cover it because I had twins, I got the purse style one.  I would HIGHLY reccommend getting the car adaptor and battery pack.  Both were lifesavers when we were out!  I exclusively pumped for 3 1/2 months until I had to stop for medical reasons and if I hadn't had to quit, I would still be doing it.
