Preemies

preemies having preemies?

I just heard on the news that there is a new study that preemies are more likely to have preemature babies in the future. this makes me so sad.  The idea of my son potentially having to go through what I went through breaks my heart.

I know it is a long time away (he's 3 months after all) but hearing it really made me sad.  Has anyone else heard anything about this study??

  • I really wouldn't worry about it - really. My mom was premature, my brothers were premature (LTP/scheduled c/s for twins), and I had DS because our house burned down and the cats died. Will he have a preemie? Seems circumstantial to me. There are a lot of studies on a lot of things, but I think to have an answer on this there is a LOT of research left to be done.

Sorry to post twice - iPad won't let me edit my first post! I found a summary of the study online. It basically says that women who were born preterm face an increased risk of pregnancy complications. Which makes sense, as we know high BP and diabetes can be genetic. (Men weren't studied, so try to stop worrying PhillyGal!) https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_129566.html

so I just have to make sure he doesn't marry a preemie girl? haha kidding but I still worry for the preemie baby girls...  I will definitely read the story, I only got a blurb on the news and wondered if anyone else saw it. thanks for finding it! I've had a heck of a day and just realized I haven't even peed since 8 am!

Well, yes.  But to re-iterate Urban's point, that doesn't mean that prematurity is the main factor.  My mom had 2 perfect textbook pregnancies.  I had 2 very un-perfect, non-textbook pregnancies with numerous complications.  She went late both times; I had my kids at 18 and 31 weeks.  No one else in my family has had so much trouble having children.

This is me. My mom's pregnancies were textbook, term for all three of us. Mine were complicated and 36 and 32 weeks. My aunts both had issues though. One with ptl and the other with IC. Both had multiple losses. My cousin's daughter was term and complication free. Perhaps I'm more like My aunts? But reading that article, I'm glad I have sons.

  • I haven't heard of this before but I am a preemie (34w) who had a preemie.
  • I'm pretty sure the risk only applies to women who were preemies, but there are probably still many factors involved in determining these statistics.
  • My mom was a preemie (34w), but went late with both me and my sister.  I had DS at 34w5d.

What I am curious about -  my grandmother had pProm with all of her pregnancies, and I did with DS...I wonder if there is a genetic link there?

  • I haven't heard or read the study. But I do know that I am preemie. I was 6 weeks early. And I had a preemie. I have thought it was a little bizarre when I think about it.

ETA: I don't know the reason for my premature birth because I am adopted. But DD came early due to IC.

  • I was a preemie born 8 weeks early do to Pprom. My 1st was 5 weeks early due to Pprom. Who knows if connected or not.
