Pain when BF?

I'm a FTM and I won't lie, after reading different thigns and hearing different friends' accounts with breastfeeding, I'm a little scared. Basically it sounds like it hurts. A lot. I know I want to BF but I'm not going to lie, I'm a little worried now. Any tips?

Re: Pain when BF?

  • For me it only hurt for the first week - after that, easy peasy.

  • It does/can hurt, a lot.  You nipples might bleed.  It should only hurt when the baby first latches though, once he/she gets going, the pain should ease up.  The only tip I can really give you is just to be educated, know that it might hurt for the first couple/few weeks, that newborns eat for about 45-60 minutes each time (I had no idea it would take that long), and just be prepared to tough it out.  Be totally honest with the lactation consultant at your hospital (if there is one) about how it's going and take any advice she gives you.  If you have problems when you get home, call them for more advice.

  • I would look in your area to see where the closest LaLeche Leage meetings are held and start attending them. Those ladies are an awesome support group and are filled with experience and knowledge!
  • It does hurt and feel uncomfortable!  The first 6 weeks were really rough for me but now I have no pain and no issues.  So it does get better!  The thing I found helpful was to go to a support group.  There is one in my area that meets once a week.  It was a life saver in those first 4-6 weeks.  I got to talk with other moms and have an LC check my latch.  Every week it boosted my spirits and got me through the rough times. Check to see if there is a LLL or a support group run by your hospital.
