XP: Placenta Previa/Low Lying Placenta

At my 20 week scan my placenta was completely covering my cervix.  Since then I have had a few bleeds and put on mild restrictions.  I just had an ultrasound again yesterday and my placenta is now 1.5 cm away from the opening.  My Dr. stated that it needs to be 10 cm away from the opening for a vaginal delivery to take place.  He scheduled me for a c-section at 39 weeks but will check me right before to see if it has moved.  I've looked online and most Dr. will deliver vaginally if it is 3 cm away from the opening.  I would really like to avoid a c-section and feel like 10 cm is a bit extreme.

Does anyone have any experience with this or been through something similar.  Any advice would be appreciated!

  • My placenta moved into the clear between weeks 20 and 36. From what my doctor said, it sounds like it remedies itself most of the time. I wouldn't worry too much about it yet. FWIW, I had to have a c-section in the end because my water leaked early and induction didn't work.

  • I can't remember the cut-off my doctor used.  But when I experienced the same issue my doctor told me that as your belly grows it tends to grow UP and the placenta moves away from the cervix.  Sure enough it remedied itself.  Hope your placenta falls in line, too!

  • No low lying placenta this time but had it last time. Can't remember what my OBs # was but, like others, mine corrected on its own. If you haven't been checked since 20 weeks, think positive! From what I understand, it does self-correct most times so chances are you have nothing to worry about.

She has been checked and it's at 1.5cm.

I don't have personal experience but I've heard 2-4 cm is a gray zone, and 4+ cm is good. 10 is a little extreme. I would ask for a follow up u/s closer to the dd and hopefully it has moved more and you can convince your dr. that 4 is standard.

Her ticker says she's 32 weeks pregnant though. She was 1.5 cm at 20 weeks.

From OP: " I just had an ultrasound again yesterday and my placenta is now 1.5 cm away from the opening. "

Unless I suck at reading comprehension, I think this means she was checked yesterday and is now 1.5 cm.

I had a complete previa last time, and have a marginal placenta previa this time.  These are the exact numbers my OB used when I had my appointment last week.
