Natural Birth

Breech early on

I know it may not matter that my son is currently breech since I'm only 20 weeks BUT when does it start to matter? And will my OB even be able to tell at my next apt where he is since I'm not getting an u/s?

I think I sound a little crazy and I am but I just want to be as prepared as I can be and start doing exercises etc when I should to hopefully have him flip. I had a med free birth with my first and just assumed I'd be able to again.

Thanks!!

Re: Breech early on

  • I have two boys and both were breech all the way up til the last week. With the first they kept saying c/s bc I was not only breech but past my due date. My OB was the only one that kept saying it didnt matter and not to worry.  Boy was he right! I went to the dr on 07/06 and LO was breech so we scheduled induction via c/s for next evening and when we got there I had dilated to 8 and he was head down.

It is frustrating when you cant feel as prepared as you would like, but the more relaxed you are about the LO being breech the more likely he is to flip into position as you get closer to term.

  • They can flip even when you're full term or in labor.  My last baby was breech until around 32 weeks.  She flipped after two five minute sessions on the inversion table.  I would wait until you get to 30+ weeks before you start worrying and then maybe try some of the techniques on spinning babies to try to turn it.

  • Thanks guys !
    This is good advice!

  • My MW said she doesn't get concerned until I think 34 weeks. Focus on not sitting reclined and leaning back like a couch potato. Sit on the hard floor, or a yoga ball whenever possible. If you are sitting on the couch, try to sit straight up prop pillows behind you. Pelvic tilts/rocking is supposed to be really helpful too. I tried to do these daily in the third trimester. My baby was born in perfect position : I'm not sure if it was because I did these things or not, but I'm thankful she was in good position because I had a quick and straight forward 4.5 hour med free birth.

  • My MWs told me it was a concern by about 34-36 weeks. Your LO, at 20 weeks, still has lots of room to move around. And like PP said, if they are breech at the very end, there is still a chance they could turn :)

  • Oh! I'm so excited to finally have personal experience to share.

My baby was breech early in the pregnancy (A/S was at 18ish weeks) but it was no cause for concern. He flipped head down sometime in the start of the 3rd trimester or so.

There's just so much room for them to move until the very end, and even coming up on 38 weeks or later, babies can manage to move and flip down.

  • My MWs said no worries till 34-36 weeks also.  Even then, it's not a huge worry, they can still flip.  spend some time each day in the cat/cow yoga pose on all 4s.  That helps give baby more room, and gravity helps pull them in the right direction.  Avoid and inversion stuff, like if you do yoga regularly, no downward facing dogs etc.  Good luck, I'm sure LO will turn for you!  :o)
