Dairy wins again

Since DS's 1 year visit I've been telling myself and anyone who asks that we will do the recommended dairy trial "next week".  Well, this morning I finally took the plunge and gave him an ounce of cow's milk.  Now the poor guy has a runny nose, horrible diaper rash, and gas that would clear any room.  I knew it had to be done, but I still feel like an awful mommy.

Anyone else still dealing with an intolerance/allergy the experts thought LO would outgrow by a year?

Re: Dairy wins again

  • I'm still dealing with dairy and soy intolerance.  I tested soy a couple weeks ago with horrible consequences.  Dairy has always been more worse than soy so I'm not eager to test any time soon.  My doc has always told me he thinks he will outgrow it by 2 years though, not one year.  *hugs*  It is so hard.

  • The more I read up on it and the more I talk to DH's family the more I think it might be a lifelong issue for him.  In the past year six members of DH's family (grandparents, mom, DH, brother, and a cousin) have discovered that cutting out or severely limiting dairy solves the GI problems they have had most of their lives.  I'm still hopeful he will outgrow it, but if he doesn't at least its a simple GI/rash issue and not an anaphayactic issue.  I'm still debating whether to push for a referral to an allergist or not.  On one hand we obviously know how to take care of it (avoid dairy) but on the other I wonder if there is more we should be concerned about.

ETA:  I also always say at least its not a soy issue because soy is in EVERYTHING it seems.  I can't imagine having to avoid it as well so big props to you!

  • That's too bad!!

I just recently learned that my sister has a similar dairy problem. She drinks soy in her home but while we visited my parents cross country she decided to have cows milk and had gas that was disgusting!! It would be an all day thing bleeh!!! Oh and she never had this issue until this last year, she's 22.
Hopefully your LOs outgrow it soon!

His soy issue is less intense, with dairy he can't have any trace amount in any kind of baked good etc.  For soy it's just the major sources i.e. soy milk, soy cheese, edamame, etc.  He can have soybean oil and soy lecithin, so that is very helpful!

My LO has bloody explosive diarrhea and is in visible pain if he gets dairy or soy.  So not anaphylaxis, but still pretty intense.  :-(  I'm hoping it's not a lifelong problem, but I've changed my diet for so long now that it wouldn't be the end of the world if it was.

We took him to the allergist around 11ish months.  He tested negative to the skin test so it is not an allergy, just an intolerance.  My pedi mentioned the possibility of an IgE allergy but they didn't draw blood to check for that.  I may push for it at the 15 month appointment, in a few weeks, but I need to test him first. :-(

That is why we haven't pushed for the referral just yet.  We already know how to treat it, obviously, so if its an intolerance the allergist won't have anything we don't already have and can't really tell us anything new.  Our pedi has already given us a note to take food in for him if we go somewhere they don't allow outside food (football and baseball games namely) and if its still there when he hits school she will gladly help us fill out paperwork there as well.

  • We are still chugging along with the MSPI with DD. she is on Neocate Jr. She has been able to tolerate small amounts of cheese and baked dairy so I'm hopeful. Her GI plans to reevaluate at 18 months, but she sees her pedi next month so I'm thinking of doing a trial before then.

After her last trial with Greek yogurt we had horrible rash, vomiting, diarrhea, and fussiness. Maybe this time will go better. Fingers crossed for all of these LOs.

To top it off, it looks like our twins are headed to Neocate with the same issues,as their Alimentum trial is not looking promising. At least I know what we're up against this go around.
