Xp- solids for a bf preemie

I will xp this on the bf board for anyone who is on both but I'm wondering if anyone knows if I should look to start solids at 6 months actual or 6 months adjusted age (8 months actual).

I know I need to wait for him to show interest but I want to start making and freezing some baby foods so I was thinking a bit ahead.

Thanks!

  • You will see that there are differing opinions on this. First off I would ask your pedi what they feel is best for your LO. Then I think it's more of a personal decision and if your LO is showing readiness, as you mentioned in your post. We started dd on solids at about 5 months actual our pedi actually encouraged this, as long as we were comfortable with it. She was showing signs of rediness. We went SLOW with it. At first I just spoon fed her BM just to get used to the spoon and to see if she still had the tounge reflex. Then I started introducing veggies. Did that for a few weeks then started fruits, same deal. We just started meats this week. Honestly I would go with your mommy gut, if you think everyone is ready then go for it! Your LO will let you know if they are on board or not!

^ This - there are two schools of thought. Our pedi preferred us to start at adjusted age, but we did BLW so waited until 8/6 adj/showing readiness. I don't think it matters if a baby is BF or FF on when they start eating solids, though.

  • Thanks guys!

For some reason I thought bf and ff babies had different starting time frames. It seems like all my friends who ff started before my bf moms. I know they say 46 months so I wasn't sure! I'll ask my pedi at the 4 month appt. but I wanted to have an idea before I went in case I totally disagreed!

  • Thanks everyone! Part of me is excited to start feeding him real food but the other part of me wants to wait a while! So conflicting !

  • we started very casually around 8m/4.5 and got more consistent around 5.5 adjusted.  We moved her quickly through textures (following her cues) in an effort to try to introduce some baby led weaning practices.  We do still do some chunky purees so say BLW very loosely.  My daughter very quickly dropped bottles/bf sessions after starting solids consistently so I try to focus on calorie dense foods knowing that she dropped a significant # of ounces.

  • Our pedi told us to hold off until we were comfortable at our 6 month appt (4 adj), but at our 9 month appt. we were told we should have been feeding DD more solids than we were (we started solids around 8.5 months/6.5 adjusted).  I honestly think it is personal preference for the parents and readiness for the child, no time is the 'right' or 'wrong' time to start solids in my opinion!
