Baby Names

Double names ?

DH and I agree that we like/love

-Mary Beth
-Mary Kate
-Mary Margaret

My question is, on the birth certificate, do you put that as a first name? If so, do you give a middle name? I dont want her to just be "Mary" since we have such a plain last name. I want it to be her first name. My mom says "do whatever you want-- you've seen some of these names lately!". I just wonder what is normally done for these double names.

Also, which is your favorite from the list?

  • I probably wouldn't give another middle name, but that's certainly an option if you wanted to.  My favorite of your choices is Mary Kate.

  • I prefer Mary Beth from your list.  I wouldn't give another name for the middle name but if you want to, I would definitely make it something short.  Something like Anne or Kate would be ideal.

  • Mary Kate then Mary Beth. I don't like Mary Margaret at all.

  • Pretty sure that it's technically still a first and middle name, am I wrong?

I know a Mary Beth and her name is Mary Elizabeth ______.

I know a few girls who it is their first name. I have a friend named Anna Mary and her middle name is Louise.

  • Mary Kate LN IMO. Everyone I know IRL with a double MN hates it and says they wish their parents didn't do it because it's more of a hassle with legal documents and I'm sure the same goes for a double FN.
  • My favorite is Mary Margaret.

I have been considering Mary Agnes myself and I think I would not have another name as the MN. I think you can still consider it a double FN even if there is no MN. I have friends who have no MN at all with a single FN.

Just to throw another one at you just becuase...my SIL has mentioned Mary Grace and I think it is just adorable!

  • I like Mary Kate the most. Mary Margaret sounds like the name of a nun IMO. I personally would make it fn & mn on the BC.

This! I knew a woman and that's how her name is spelled. Also, I think depending on what name you likenfor a MN it'd work better!

  • My DD'S fn is Shelby Kate and her middle name is Louise, so Shelby Kate Louise LN. I don't feel the mn is necessary unless you have a name you like. In our case, Louise is a family name. When we circle monogram her clothes we drop "Kate." I really like Mary Kate with nn Molly Kate.

Completely not true, IMO. I have a double middle name and it's NEVER been an issue. Most legal documents just say first name, first initial of first middle name, and last name, or it spells it out completely.

OP, I like Mary Kate and Mary Beth, but not Mary Margaret. I would do a double first name and then a middle name, but something simple (Think Anne, Lynne, Leigh, etc.)

  • I love Marybeth (one word).  Marybeth Josephine was a name we concidered for DD.
  • I think it should be Mary_____ middlename lastname if you want her to be called by both first names. I used to work in a doctors office and if there was no second middle name it would just be Mary. If there was a second middle name it would be Mary _____. Just my experience. I like Mary Beth. But I also just love the name Beth.

  • My daughter has a double first name and a middle name. On her birth certificate we put Ella Rae in the first name box and Aubrie in the middle name box.

My vote would be for Mary Kate.

  • Every person I know with a double first name has it hyphenated.  And they also have a middle name.

    My favorite is Mary Kate.

  • I have a double first name and it on birth certificate as my first name, no middle name though so took maiden name as middle when married.

By the way double first names are a pain. Nobody knows what to call you first day of school, correcting everyone all the time. My aunt with my same name eventually just went by Mary and dropped the rest because of it, i Am still called by full name.
  • LOVE double names.  My favorite on your list is Mary Margaret.

I have a lot of friends with double names and none of them have an "extra" middle name.  However, several of them have longer middle names and the double name is more of a nickname.  For example, I have several friends named Mary Elizabeth and one goes by Mary Beth, another by Mary Lib, another by Mary Liza, etc.  In the same vein, if I ever have another girl, I plan to name her Mary Eleanor and call her Mary Nell.

  • No advice on the middle name issue, but I've always loved Mary Beth. Second choice is Mary Kate. I'm not a fan of Mary Margaret at all.

  • I think you'd be totally fine to put Mary Beth (or whatever you choose) all as a first name.

My mom's name is Betty Jean and it's her entire first name. She doesn't have a middle name.

A friend of mine is Mary Beth and Mary is her first name and Beth is her middle. But, she has ALWAYS been called both. She recently got married and wanted to move her maiden name to her middle name slot and add Beth to her first name, but SS wouldn't let her touch her first name.

So, my feelings are, if you're planning on calling her by two names, just put them both as her first.

  • Mary Beth and Mary Kate are really cute. I can't decide which one I like more.

I would put First Name: Mary Middle Name: Beth.
