moms- shopping question

Where is a good place to buy fiddler shoes and boots? The ones I liked at Target were $25!!! I cant spend that on shoes that will only fit a few months! What to you spend on footware?

  • My older daughter has wide feet, and we've found the Stride Rite shoes fit her very well.  There is an outlet about an hour from our house, and we go there every once in a while (it's in an outlet mall, so it's a fun trip!).  If you use a coupon or wait for a sale, you can find good deals on them, and I'm finding those have all held up really well so they make nice hand-me-downs for my second daughter.

Also, in a place like Target I would NEVER pay full price.  I buy ahead often.  For instance, I just bought several summer clothes on crazy clearance for my daughters for next summer.  Most of it was 90% off.  It's a guessing game with shoes (in terms of size), but if you buy a basic "loafer" type shoe, that will work in all seasons.  Many of the Target shoes go on clearance.

    Good luck!

LOL!  Not a mom, as you know, but I snooped and was all, "oh boy!  I don't know enough about mom stuff!  I wonder what fiddler shoes are..."

  • I have bought all my DD's shoes at consignment sales and consignment stores. Glad I did because before she started walking, she actually didn't wear any of the adorable shoes/booties I bought or got as gifts. I thought I would put them on for cute pics, but it never happened.

The shoes I got are all in good shape. Sometimes I find the shoes with the tags still on or are still in the box.

Most pairs I have I got for around $2-$5. I bought a couple pairs of Robeeze for around $6-$8.  They are normally around $20.

  • Consignment stores and sales. There should be some kids consignment sales for fall going on near you (hopefully). Outlets are also good. It takes the edge off to pay close to half price at Stride Rite, for example.
  • Your boy is 2 right?  Just a thought, my daughter has worn size 5 for a year and is just now growing out of it, so toddler shoes aren't always grown out of quickly.  I don't really like spending more then $10 for shoes, but if my daughter is wearing them for a year, I'd be willing to spend a bit more.

  • Coming back to chime in again -- I don't mind paying a little more too because we only do one or two pairs of shoes in each size.  That's really all they need.  Resist the urge to have every style!!
  • My DD is still pretty little, but I have been buying her shoes & clothes at the end of the season on sale or clearance. Check for consignment sales in your area; that can be a great source. I don't spend more than $12 on a pair of shoes for DD since, like you said, she can only wear them for a few months. Then again, she has only been wearing shoes for 6 months... so what do I know? Ha.

Like PPs have said, look for shoes that can be used for a lot of occasions. With a boy, I imagine it's a bit easier. Right now, DD has a pair of black dress shoes and a pair of sneakers. That's it.

  • I will spend up to $25-$35 on a pair of shoes for my DD.  That being said, she usually has only 2 pairs at a time.  This summer a pink pair and a white pair.  This winter probably a black pair and a brown pair?  At first it seemed outrageous to me that I was going to spend that much on a pair of shoes she was going to outgrow (I hate to spend that much on a pair of shoes for myself!), but they are cute and I justify it by saying that DD#2 will wear them after!  I don't like to buy a year in advance, as a 1st time mom, I have NO idea what size she will be in a whole year from now.

  • Thanks ladies!  I went to a consignment shop this afternoon and got 3 pairs of shoes plus 2 sweaters for $30!  Much better.  I have to bring a few different size shoes on this trip to see what will fit him, so I got three different sizes.  I hope the smallest ones fit the best so he can grow into the rest!  Thanks again.

  • Ebay :)

BTW- for moms of girls, I LOVE the Keds leather Mary Janes.  Cute and fit well.

  • I usually get one good pair at Stride Rite (often the outlet) and then order a backup pair from Amazon.  Stride Rite is a good place to get an accurate size.  My son has wide feet so cheaper shoes at Target and such do not work for him.  We also always have a pair of Crocs in rotation.

  • Outlets are great if you have any near you.  Do you have Mom2Mom sales in your area?  We have them here - basically moms rent tables and sell their children's clothes that don't fit anymore.  I have found great bargains on everything, and I've made money selling things, too (of course, I tend to use it to buy more clothes/toys/etc.)

    I buy DD's stride rights/DC shoes there.

It's a splurge, but she LOVES her TOM's.  And they are her FAVORITE shoes.  She always goes to them first.
