Smoothies?

Do any of you guys make them? What do you use? Are they okay for the babies?

Re: Smoothies?

  • I make mine using a whole banana, an organic frozen medley of mango, pineapple and peach, coconut milk and ground flaxseed.  He LOVES them!!

They are fine for baby!!  He also occasionally has some of his brother's chocolate almond milk, peanut butter, banana and spinach smoothie.  He loves that one as well -- although because this one contains PB, be on watch for reaction.

  • I've really been wanting to try them with LO... I've heard of putting spinach in them too (veggies-yay!)

That's my main purpose for wanting to make them is for the veggies. Dd eats veggies fine and I don't have to sneak them but I need to sneak them for myself!
  • I was just wondering the same thing this morning!  DD is NOT eating her veggies, so I thought we might try for spinach in a smoothie.

When I make for myself I use a frozen banana, some yogurt (plain or vanilla) and some milk.  Just those ingredients are very tasty to me! Add a handful of any berries to alter the taste to your liking.

For those of you that serve them to your LOs, do you serve in place of a meal, as part of a meal, or as a snack?  And would it work to put in a sippy?  I was thinking they might be too thick to get through the sippy spout...but correct me if I'm wrong!

  • Oh ya! Our LO loves them Smile

I don't think you can ever go wrong with a smoothie.

  • I make them after my workouts, so they have whey protein in them. I also use: greek yogurt and fresh fruit.

For baby-- She likes strawberry/banana smoothies using Vitamin D milk and ice.

  • I do.  Just frozen fruit with yogurt, ice, and I use a low sugar juice.  I make them for myself every morning and DD usually takes a little too.

    Hahaha!

I have one more question that I thought of, can you use frozen spinach, or do you need to thaw it first, if you don't have fresh?  I always have frozen on hand.  I am tempted to go to the kitchen and throw something together with some frozen spinach and I'm scared it is going to taste gross.  LOL!

  • Okay, so if I want to make something simple what would I make? I've never made one before, so I need specifics like how much yogurt, milk and ice. I would assume I use as much fruit/veggie to my own liking?

I usually do maybe 2 big spoons of yogurt, a splash of whatever juice we happen to have on hand, and just frozen fruit a handful and a half maybe. I don't use ice because we use the frozen fruit.

ETA: If I'm making mine with spinach I usually throw a heaping handful in. Depending on the fruit it will make the smoothie a gross looking color but it tastes great.

  • If you use frozen spinach you'll want to thaw it first and squeeze out the liquid or it will make the consistency weird.

I make them every morning. We use nonGMO soy based protein powder provided by Juice Plus. For Liam, he looiives chocolate milk so I use coconut milk, frozen banana, peanut butter, a couple frozen berries, fresh spinach or kale and a 1/3 scoop protein and 1 tsp ovaltine chocolate milk mix.

For me I share with baby I use coconut milk, berries, 1/2 scoop protein, spinach I give him some of this, then finish mine up with a little ice, sometimes peanut butter, green tea or coffee.

Pinterest has some good smoothie recipes. There's one for a "green smoothie" that's good and a "coffee smoothie" that's also good.
