Preemies

Early Intro, question and XP

Hi ladies...I am here a little early as I have not delivered yet but the day is fast approaching and have been warned that it might not be much longer.  Here is my intro to the high-risk board that kinda tells you our situation.

Althought the MFM has not said IUGR just yet...I'm trying to prepare for what may be coming.

I have a question...do you need a "special" Dr. for your preemie baby?  Did you call you pedi ahead of time and let them know what's going on to for-warn them?  This is all such unchartered territory for me, any advise you might have for me would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Re: Early Intro, question and XP

  • Preemies typically spend the first several weeks of life in a neonatal intensive care unit. You will want to know which hospital in your area has this unit and deliver there if possible to avoid the risks of transferring your baby and the stress of postbirth separation. Prems are typically discharged into the care of a paediatrician after leaving the neonatal intensive care unit. How long he stays in nicu and the particulars of his care cannot be arranged until after he is born. Most paediatrician's will want a nicu summary report before accepting a new patient. Hope that helps.

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with all that right now. I gave birth to my boys at 29w4d due to PTL. They're doing great now but it was very scary.

If you have to deliver soon they will likely spend around two months in the NICU. You can then ask the neo if they have a recommendation for follow up after discharge.
