Cleaning toys

How do you clean LO's toys? And how often?

I used to be more crazy about it but now I just wash them everyone and then, unless they are obviously dirty then right away, with warm soapy water on a dish rag. Just curious what you all do.

Re: Cleaning toys

  • I might be the odd one out but... I don't clean toys unless they are obviously dirty or fell on the ground outside or something.

I washed DD1's toys every week or so when she was a baby. Back then, I had one kid, and like 5 toys, so it was easy.

Now, I have 3 kids and probably 100 toys. I'm not cleaning those weekly.

Oh, I do wash the toys that will specifically be interacting with my newborn, but otherwise, I just let the other kids play with the toys, sans cleaning.

To clean the ones my newborn might touch, I wash plastic/rubber with soap and water. If it has fabric or a stuffed animal, I throw it in the washer. Like, her wubbanub (soother with stuffy), it goes in the washer.

  • This is my second, so unless it's been spit up on or is obviously dirty I don't clean anything on a regular schedule. But I highly recommend Dreft wipes for stuffed animals that can't be washed (despite what the tag says, most stuffed animals will survive a delicate wash, this is mostly for ones with electronics inside).

  • I wash toys once a week or so, but I also do in-home day care and watch a child with oral-sensory issues so toys are often in her mouth. Little things get washed in hot soapy water, big toys get sprayed with a vinegar/water mix and everything air dries. Soft toys and stuffed animals go through the washer tied up in a pillow case on gentle cycle. I take the electronics out of them if I can, if I can't I wipe them down with a baby wipe.

  • I don't get crazy with it, if something is obviously dirty or got spit up on I clean it otherwise just the occasional wipe down or wash with soapy water here and there. They have so many toys it would be a pt job to clean them all too regularly and I firmly believe a little dirt & germ is healthy for them at this stage while they develope their immune systems. I care most about the floor & carpet where they play. I try to mop once a week and vacumn twice a week so they don't pick up anything that may have come in on someones shoe or that the cats may have brought into their play area.
