Do I need a bouncer AND a swing?

I am trying to organize my registry list...is it really necessary to get a bouncer AND a swing? I am also getting a Pack N Play. Seems like a lot of places for baby to sleep...did you find both useful? Thanks!

Re: Do I need a bouncer AND a swing?

  • Not sure if my post went through?
We did, because the swing was more for sleeping/soothing, and the bouncer was when he was awake. I left the swing downstairs and the bouncer upstairs for when I was getting ready. Save the boxes and receipts, my DS hated his first swing! Make sure you get one that reclines enough. We also had a pack n play in our bedroom where he slept the first 6 wks.

  • Depends on what you mean by bouncer.  I've never heard of a baby sleeping in a bouncer - do you mean a vibrating seat or a real bouncer?  The bouncer I am picturing is for larger babies - meaning they hold their head up and can bounce themselves up and down... it wouldn't be for sleeping.  We did have the vibrating seat and the swing and a pack and play.  The baby did not sleep in the pack and play and slept a lot in her swing during the day or watched the little toys above her head/look in the mirror on the swing.  The swing is great - but if you're looking for three different things for the baby to sleep in, I don't think you need all three.

  • I have both, but I wouldn't say you need both.  Both my boys went through phases were they did not like one or the other at times.  It was nice to have options.

  • You don't "need" to buy anything you feel is not neccessary. For me I loved the bouncer to use in the bathroom while I was showering. The swing, jumperoo and playmat in the livingroom and bumbo goes anywhere. If you don't think your gonna use don't get it. That's my point of view.
  • Thanks, everyone! DC2London, I will DEFINITELY be showing my husband your response! He will have a little freak out, but it sounds like registering for both can't hurt.

  • If you can afford it, I'd get both.  We actually used the bouncy seat more than the swing, but every baby is different.  We'll see what #2 likes.  :)

  • We're actually getting a second bouncer this time - I was always carrying it up and down the stairs. When Liam was teeny, he hated the swing (we borrowed one from a friend) but when he hit the 4 month wakeful, it was the only place he would sleep.
  • We only had a bouncy seat with DS. He loved it. If he had hated it, we would have gotten a swing, too.

  • I have no personal experience (FTM here), but read somewhere that you should have somewhere for your baby to camp out on every floor of your house.  We have a bi-level, and are registering for the Fisher Price Rock N' Play Sleeper for our bedroom, a Pack N' Play for short trips and maybe our downstairs, and have had several offers from friends looking to get rid of bouncers.  My husband is kind of a minimalist when it comes to wanting "stuff" in the house and we don't have a ton of room, so I am going to see if we can get by without a swing.  However, I might let one of our friends know the plan to see if baby sleeps fine without a swing and have their swing as a back-up.  Again, I don't really know what I am doing, but that is our plan so far.
  • I just read this chapter in Baby Bargains and was wondering the same thing. Thx for asking!

  • I found one that does both, swings and bounce.  Of course it does not do both at the same time, but it is great.

I saw a swing and bouncer combo at BRU. It's called the Graco Swing n Bounce 2 in 1 Swing. It might be helpful for those without a lot of room or wanting to buy both separately.

ditto this. I'm hoping DS2 won't require us to purchase a swing! :)

  • I had a couple swings and bouncers that I got from friends, and ended up using my Fisher Price Take Along Swing more than anything else
  • I'm registered for a bouncer, swing, and pack and play. The bouncer is more portable for around the house, and we will find a spot where the swing will likely stay. The pack and play will be good, not only for our house, but to bring elsewhere.
