Question for 2+ timers... daybed in nursery?

DH and I disagree about keeping a daybed in the baby's nursery.  I don't want to put it in there because I don't think we'll actually use it and it will just clutter up the space - the baby will be in our room initially but I don't see why after she is in her crib we would need to sleep in there too.  Any words of advice?

  • Honestly, I wish we had bought on sooner! We put one in around 12 months once I went back to work. Some nights dh would sleep there when I had cranky baby, sometimes I would crawl in for a few hours of uninterrupted sleep once baby was fast asleep in our bed! We were not going to be a bed sharing family!

  • On the nights when your child is ill or needs to nurse a lot, a daybed could be a huge blessing. I fell asleep in our rocker more times than I can remember-- not comfortable.

Whether it's worth the convenience or not depends on your space.

  • I'm sure that at a minimum we'll set up our Thermarest Dream Time (camping mat, not nursery gear!) in the nursery for the reasons stated above.
The word you're looking for is SEX.  I promise.  No, it's not gender.  It's sex.  You're welcome.
  • I've never once slept in my DD's room. Although, she did sleep in our room until almost 7 months (not in our bed, don't worry). We moved her into her own crib at about 6.5 months old. Our room is right across the hall from hers so it's pretty easy to get there if she cries and easy to hear her without the monitor on. I guess it would depend on how far apart your rooms are?

  • We went through a phase of sleeping on DS's floor. A daybed would have been nice.
  • Dd was in her crib in her own room when I went back to work at three months and she's slept in there alone every night since.
  • I have never slept in DS's room..... I actually never even considered it until I read this post. DS was in our room until he was three months, then we moved him to his own, set up a monitor, and haven't looked back since. We have never needed to be in his room and the only time we brought him in our bed was when I had a dream about something happening to him and I wanted him by me the rest of the night.

  • We don't have one, but we partially bed share. The kids always come into our bed to sleep with us after the first waking.

  • I would of loved that when DS was a baby. We ended up putting a full size bed in his room around 11 months. For those nights when LOs can't sleep, its wonderful! I wish we would of put it in there sooner...

  • I never even considered it.  B slept in our room in the rock and play for the first 6 months and then went to his crib.  His room is right next door to mine and I would just nurse him on the rocker.  I have never slept in his room.

  • We didn't have one, but I think it's a great idea. I had a hard time getting in and out of bed for the first 6 weeks, and I wound up on the couch with my son in the pack and play. A day bed in his room probably would have been more comfortable for both of us.
  • It wouldn't be practical for me. I never once slept in my daughter's room, but her door to her room is very close to ours. Unless you live in a palace I don't see the point. I do have a rocker in there though.

  • My son was in his own room in his own crib since 2 weeks... He never comes in our bed... That's a pet peeve of mine  plus we have a video monitor so I can see him from my bed

  • I've never slept in the nursery. DD's crib was in our room for the first 7 months. Once we moved her crib to the nursery I would just go in there and nurse on the glider and ottoman throughout the night. It's right across the hall.

It's completely personal preference what you would like to do. DH and I happen to like sleeping by each other every night, so that wasn't something we ever considered.

  • I'm not a fan of having a daybed in the nursery. Seems like that is just unnecessary, especially if you don't already have one you'd be buying new or if you have another guest bed. I could see if you wanted to still have a place for company to sleep if you're short on space.
DS slept in our room until around 7 mos. after than if he was bein extra fussy/not sleeping well, DH would sleep with him on the couch or we would bring him back to our room. Occasionally we would nod off in his rocker in the nursery.
We never slept in his bedroom until earlier this year when we got him his own bed. He has a double bed and sometimes we just fall asleep putting him to bed and sometimes he just asks one or both of us to snuggle him that night, so we stay.

  • I wouldn't feel that's necessary, especially with making space for all of the other furniture that needs to go in there.

DS never slept in our room. The first couple of weeks we tried putting him in a bassinet in our room he hated it. We tried his crib and he would immediately fall asleep. Weird, but that's what he liked I guess.

We had a monitor and checked on him frequently. It wasn't a big deal to get up and go there every time he woke. Plus we never had to deal with transitioning in any way.Adding a bed would have been a waste of space and IMO.

  • I never once slept in DD's room' so to me a day bed would be nothing but a place for more laundry and clutter to pile up.
DD was also in her crib from night one, but we had a video monitor so we could still see her.
  • Unnecessary in my opinion. I wouldn't want LO to get used to me sleeping in there. Plus I find that we all sleep better when we're in our own rooms. She keeps me up if we sleep in the same room...and noise we make wakes her up. etc.

  • The girls room used to be our guest room. When DD1 was first born, we kept our guest bed in there. We never really used it to sleep in there with her except for the occasional nap, but it was nice to have for reading and playing before bed time.

  • In our old house, we had the room for a futon/bed in DS's room, and we put one in there. It was also our guest room, so that when we had visitors, DS slept in a pack-and-play in our room, and our guests slept in that room. BUT it was awesome having it for when DS was sick (and didn't want to put him in our bed), or when DH was snoring and I needed a space that was quiet ;)

Now, the daybed is in our spare room in our new house and DS and I will sleep there occasionally (he sleeps on the trundle part, I sleep on the main part). It's WAY WAY better than trying to share a bed with a toddler!

    So I'm pro-day bed :)
