mirena and hormones

I have read a couple of.time on this board that the hormones in the mirena iud don't get into your blood and just stay in the uterus. Unfortunately that is not true. The progesterone hormones will get in your bloodstream, although the levels are low. From the Mirena Prescribing Information package: "The Intrauterine release of levonorgestrel results in the absorption of the drug into the systemic circulation. The drug can be detected in plasma within 15 minuites of insertion and maximum concentrations are seen within a few hours. Plasma levels of levonorgestrel stabilize after the first few weeks of use at between 150-200 pg/mL."

  • Yes! And I was the unlucky recipient of some of those hormone side effects. The Mirena affected me worse than any BC pill I ever took.

  • It does have the potential for nasty side effects, like any birth control. My mom received 2 pulmonary embolisms, one in each lung, from an estrogen based pill. It is all a trial and error. The Mirena worked well for me for the first 6 months, but I dealt with some pain caused by the fact I was using it without ever having children. I plan to use it this time around because I don't want the heavy bleeding of the paraguard.
