Separated tailbone during pregnancy

Anyone diagnosed with separated tailbone while pregnant?

I cannot sit or lay down without excruiating pain. Dr. diagnosed separated tailbone. Said some MoM's have issue with their pelvis or hip bones in expanding but because I have an inverted uterus it has effected my tailbone.

He said that it may not get better. I am only 15 weeks with the trio so am trying to imagine going to work, driving, etc.

Currently, I am told to take Tylenol for pain, heat on tailbone and sit on a donut. Any other suggestions? Did it get better for anyone as the pregnancy continued?

  • I have no suggestions, but I do wish you luck. Sounds terribly uncomfortable.

  • I broke my tailbone delivering my son, and have the pelvic separation in this pregnancy too.  I recommend seeing a physical therapist who specializes in women's issues.  They can help move the tailbone or provide exercises that strengthen the surrounding areas.  They can also do soft tissue manipulation of the surrounding areas, which start to get out of alignment and can become painful too.

I also did acupuncture for healing the tailbone after delivery and it made a difference.  My acupuncturist is an osteopath doctor, and it was covered by my insurance.

    Good luck!

  • I had posterior pelvic separation.  It was very painful, but fortunately it didn't happen until late in the pregnancy - around 35 weeks.  Since I was so far along, they more or less told me to just deal.  I've heard that PT can help - you might check with your doctor about that.

  • Thanks, I am definitely going to follow-up with my doctor and ask about PT. It has been 3 days and no relief. I can't imagine the next 20 weeks.
