Baby Names

What do you associate with the name

Lucia? (Loo-see-ya)

i know there was a post about the pronunciation of this name a few months ago, but my concern is something else . . . would you assume, when seeing this name, that the girl is latina?  (and i know there is also a scandinavian association with the popularity of st. lucia there.)

but i am curious if:

A) you would assume she's latina? and

B) would it be weird if she wasn't?

TIA!

Re: What do you associate with the name

  • I would not assume she's Latina. In fact, my first guesses would be Italian or Scandinavian.

  • Italian.  I am Scandinavian and I wouldn't have associated it with Lucia.

  • A) you would assume she's latina? Based on where I live, yes.

    B) would it be weird if she wasn't? No

I had Lucia on our list for awhile, but decided that the 3 diff pronunciations (Spanish, Italian, Swedish) were too much possible confusion for me. So I reverted to Lucy.

  • I think Italian too. I'd only think Latina if she had a Hispanic surname.

  • My personal association is my trig teacher, Mr. Lucia (loo-sha).  Nice guy.  Also the baseball coach.  I realize nobody else has that association :P  I have to think every time I see it on here about how to actually pronounce it.

I'd assume she's Italian...which could be completely wrong because Italians are rare around here, but it just looks Italian to me.  And now that you've told me to think Latino, it doesn't fit for me even when I think about.

  • ok, so for all of you who think Italian . . . or Swedish . . . would it be weird if she was neither of those either?!!

  • I would totally assume she was a Latina. However, I wouldn't think that was weird, I would just be surprised when in walked a white or black or Asian girl. I have an Ingrid in my class that is 100 percent Mexican. I found it surprising, but not weird. Her parents just wanted an American name!

Actually, the only Lucia that I know/know of is my step-grandmother (Loo-shu) and she is not Latina or Italian (probably hence the pron.).

However, I wouldn't think it was weird if she wasn't.

    I would use it. I think it's pretty :)

  • I automatically think of Ana Lucia from the TV series Lost.  And also a latina.
  • I would assume the kid was of Italian descent... not Latin.

  • I'd never think the name was latina... more European, actually. I love it, and it would suit a little girl of almost any ethnicity.

  • I personally would assume Italian or Latina, but I don't think it'd be a weird choice for someone who wasn't of those nationalities.

The character from lost also immediately came to my mind.

If I saw / heard the name Lucia, I would think latina, but wouldn't think it was weird if she wasn't.

  • I'm a teacher and I have students of all ethnicities with all different names (Hispanic children with American names, European names, white children or possibly half-white children with Spanish names, etc., etc) so I wouldn't assume anything. If you like the name go for it.
