C-Section Hospital Bag

What was the one thing that you are most glad you had in your hospital bag when you went in for your C-Section?  And if you had an unplanned C-Section, what is the one thing you wish you would have had?

Re: C-Section Hospital Bag

  • For me personally there wasn't anything I was missing. I had an emergency c/s and the hospital supplied EVERYTHING I needed.

  • I wish I had brought a night gown to sleep in, not a short set. I am so glad I had brought a dress to wear the next day, wish I had brought two because I had to re-wear my dress! Oh, and lip balm. Mine was broken and my lips were killing me by the end.

  • I wish I had taken my own towels. The ones at the hospital were tiny and hard. And I forgot my hair dryer and DH "couldn't find it" to bring it to me.
  • I loved having my own bathrobe, boy shorts and nursing tanks. Nothing C-Section specific.  Mine was planned.  I wore a dress home and stuck to dresses and skirts with elastic bands that were above the scar for a few days.

  • I cant recall missing anything (both of mine were unplanned)--even if I did, DH was going home every day to take care of our animals so he would've grabbed me whatever I needed.

I had the regular stuff packed--nursing tanks, nightgown, big undies, nipple cream, baby book, outfit to go home for me and baby etc

  • I recommend bringing your own pads.  I brought regular flow pads.  The ones the hospital has are for vaginal births, and you obviously bleed waaaaaaay more with vaginal, and they were highly uncomfortable for me and to be quite frank, unnecessary.  I brought my normal sized always brand regular flow maxi pads and they have worked beautifully.  I only go thru about 3 a day.  id recommend your own high waisted briefs as well...those mesh ones suck. Lol and I second the flowy nightgowns. thats all I brought to wear and have loved them.

  • I've never had an emergency c section, but for my first c section I'd wished I'd had lip balm and something to do while I was stuck in bed.  I'm not a tv person, and my son ended up in the NICU.  The next time I took reading material and knitting stuff and the last time I took my netbook and knitting stuff.  My first delivery was an induction so once the baby was born I was exhausted.  I wasn't exhausted after my c sections and when the baby is sleeping I like having something to do.

  • I loved having my own clothes (nursing tank, cardi and yoga pants). It was nice to get out of the hospital gown.

I was also really glad to have my boppy.

Wish I had brought my own towels.

DH was thankful that my parents brought him a memory foam mattress topper for the couch/bed in the hospital since he stayed all three nights with me.

  • I had an emergency c-section with no bags packed.  The thing I was most happy I had someone bring me were these pj pants that had a VERY loose waste line and a high waste line.  Also, flip-flops!  The worst thing in the world is having to bend over to take your shoes off.  Also, I had a NICU baby so I was really glad someone brought me bras that snap in the back (putting over-the-head nursing bras on was painful and I felt funny going down to the NICU without a bra on) and t-shirts or loose nursing tops.

Oh, and embrace the enormous underwear the hospital provides.  Best thing ever for a c-section.  The LAST thing I wanted was my panty line hitting my incision spot.  I will likely have a c-section again and I plan on buying a belly band.  My stomach felt so much better when I had support around it, so when I would sit or ride the wheelchair to the nicu, I would hold a pillow against my stomach.

  • Mine was emergency and everything I'd packed for vaginal (clothing wise) was never used. I'd rather bleed on their mesh underwear than my own and when I finally put on sweatpants 3 days later, I wished I were back in the hospital gown.

They gave me a binder to help hold everything in and I LOOOVED that thing! It just made me feel better and I swear it was what got me walking quicker. I will be bringing that when I have #2 (a few years down the road) just in case they don't supply it next time. Hopefully they give you one though.

I definitely loved having my boppy too. We were always bringing it for the vaginal birth anyway but it helped protect my scar when I was holding her AND feeding her.

  • I had everything in my bag packed for a vaginal birth until I found out today I cannot have one. Guess I know what I will be doing this weekend! :D

Thanks for the wonderful ideas ladies.
