Dev. Pedi vs Psych?

We are on a waitlist to see a Dev. Pedi as well as a school Psych. In your opinion who is most qualified to diagnose ASD/SPD?

Re: Dev. Pedi vs Psych?

  • Of your two choices - Dev. Pedi.  Though a good school psychologist can also perform evaluations theirs will be for educational needs only ie - working out the IEP - so you'll likely need a deve pedi eval anyway, if you are looking to get any services covered by insurance.

I could be wrong, but while an OT is the best person to treat SPD I don't think they can actually diagnose.

For us DS was evaluated by both a school pscyh and a dev pedi and I was much more comfortable with the dev pedi.  I thought her eval was more thourough and came with much more experience.

  • In our situation the Dev Pedi referred us to a psych within the same organization to do the ADOS since DS's presentation is pretty mild. It was the psych who gave the Dx but future follow ups are with Dev Pedi.

  • Thanks everyone! We met with a private OT this summer who felt that DD did have SPD (visual, vestibular and proprioceptive issues as well as low tone in her hips) but she couldn't formally diganose her.

My gut tells me that she is on the spectrum though I think she would probably be on the mild end of it. I just want to make sure it's someone who is very well trained and would be able to spot high-functioning ASD.

  • Ditto Auntie.  However, I prefer a Clinical Psych over a school one but that is JMO.
  • My son finally got in with the developmental pediatrician near us. They told us his eval will be done in a team approach by the dev. pedi and a school psychologist.

Also, his OT told us he had "moderate sensory issues" but I was also under the impression she couldn't give him an official Dx.

Btw, OP, you've got PM. :)
