Vent about daycare

I'm the first to say leave your kid at home if they are sick. That being said, DS is rarely sick. The most I've taken him to daycare with is a clear runny nose. Today they call to tell me that DS has a fever and I need to come get him. His temp was 99.8. That's not a fever! Give my kid a glass of milk and have him sit for a bit. He was probably running around like mad and got too hot. That and she says he likes to wear is jacket all the time. Well when I take him in the morning it's chilly. Inside he doens't need it! Seriously! Now I have to leave work and use up vacation time for my sick kid.

Re: Vent about daycare

  • Do you have a sick policy in place?  At our center (I work at) we can not  send a child home until the temp is 100.0 under the arm. 99.9 doesn't cut it has to be 100...  We can call the parents with a heads up letting them know it is close but until it reaches 100 they can stay.

This is true at my DD's daycare too.  The DC provider usually texts me if/when her temp gets high. She has my approval to give Ibuprofen once during the day.

I'd ask for a copy of their sick policy if you do not already have one.  Their reasons to send a child home should be pretty explicit.

  • At our center it's 100.5 before they can send home...that being said, ds came home last Friday burning up with a 101.3 temp that they didn't even catch.  :(

  • A fever is a fever at my dc. If your kid is cranky or acting abnormal to them, they get a temperature taken. If it's above the fever mark, they go home.

My kid seems to be one of those that catches everything so I am thankful my dc has this policy in place. I may get more calls than I want about her being sick - but as long as she does this for all the sick kids, I'm good. The less germs in the school the better, though I know I can't stop DD from catching everything.

  • I can't remember what my DC policy is, but I know they have one. It's either 100 or 100.5.

But what I really like about my DC is that they use their judgement, too. If my kid has a bit of a fever but is otherwise acting happy and normal, they will just call me to let me know and give her Tempra. On the other hand, if she doesn't have a fever but is beside herself (lethargic, throwing up, etc.), they will ask me to pick her up.
