Mirena

I have my 6 week appointment October 9th and I'm just curious about Mirena. I know everyone is different but what are the  pros and cons for you ladies who have it? Is it worth getting?

Re: Mirena

  • I got mine at my 6 week pp appt.

I like it.  I like not thinking about bc.  Insertion was a breeze (like a pap with a pinch, literally).  I still get periods which is ok.  I did bleed on and off for more than a month after I got it which annoyed me to no end.  But that is the only con.

  • today is a bad day to ask me. I just started my period and am having DREADFUL cramps right now. Feel like I'm getting torn in half.... :(

But overall, yes I like it. I had one after I had my son, dr didn't put it in right. After a few months it felt like I had a something pinching me. Decided to get it out after a year, for pain but more so because we were ready for #2.

After DD, I was going to get my tubes tied but dr wouldn't because I'm "too young" so back to IUD for me... I've had very light periods and this is my first really bad cramp day. Dr said I very well could not have a period after a few months. When I had it in at first, I had no period.

    Totally worth getting, IMO.

  • I loved mine.  Had it for 5 years.

Pros:  No period for me for 5 years & I also didn't get pregnant.

Cons:  It hurt going in and coming out, but I think that is different for everyone.

  • Did you have a vaginal birth?  If you did, my experience likely won't apply to you.  I had a csection after dilating to only a 3 and that made my insertion VERY painful.  Like, head to toe sweats, retching, writhing pain (clearly I'm not cut out for vaginal birth so yay for the csection lol).  But, once it was in and I stopped spotting/bleeding (about a month off and on) I rarely got a period and when I did it was light spotting.  I had it removed in July and the removal was easy peasy (although, it had migrated up into my cervix so there was the potential to need surgery to remove it but luckily the doctor was able to get it).

  • I LOVE my mirena. I'm on my second one now. I spotted off and on for a few months, but haven't had AF since before I got pg with my twins. My first insertion wasn't bad at6w pp. My removal and insertion of second one was way worse. I cramped pretty bad for about 24 hrs. We aren't planning on having more kids, but sterilization for either one of us is too permanent for me. There are strings that hang down into your vagina that you're supposed to feel for once a month to make sure it's in place. One month I couldn't feel mine and freaked. I went to the dr and they were just tucked up in a funny spot. I quit checking my strings after that.

  • I am very happy with mine.  Insertion did not bother me at all.  I have still not had a PP period, although that could be b/c I am still BFing.

We are undecided on if we will have another child, so something that was very reliable and could be used while BFing was very important to me.

  • I liked my Mirena. It was just a little pinch when inserted and didn't hurt at all when removed. It's nice not having to worry about taking bc every day.

I didn't really have periods, just light spotting from time to time which was awesome.

The only thing I didn't like was how the hormones affected me, but I'm pretty sensitive to them. Not everyone has issues with them.

  • Yikes! I guess I'll take my chances with it. Hopefully I have luck with it. I really don't know what else to get. I want something long term that I don't have to think about but geez... sounds worse than better
