Hanger and ambulance??!!!!

I was moving clothes from one closet to another and my son had gotten a hold of a hanger. I didn't think much of it because he was pushing it around on his walker. The next thing I know he's crying and I run to where he is and the hanger is stuck in his throat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Somehow, he put the plastic hanger in his mouth without me seeing it and got it turned around to where the part that hangs on the rack was stuck in his throat!!!!

I totally freaked out and tried to pull it out. Well, it wouldn't come out so I yanked it out because he was crying frantically and I was in panic mode. The next thing I know his mouth is bleeding and he crying uncontrolably! I swoop him up and don't know what to do (we live outside of town in the country). My neighbor wasn't home and hubby is at work. So I called 911 and they sent an ambulance out!!!

I told them I thought he was okay, but they wanted to send one out anyway. So, they get here and he had stopped crying and they said his mouth didn't look damaged and his throat was okay. OMG! I was scared to death.

Warning; hangers are dangerous!!!!!!

  • Thank god he's ok. I would have been so freaked out! Prbly safe to get a follow up with his pedi.. Just because I'd be paranoid. When will kids learn to stop putting none food items in their mouth!?! It stresses us out!

  • OMG, I swear that same thing happened to me last night. It is as if I had written this post myself. Every single thing you described I went through. This wasn't the first time my daughter was playing with those hangers but I had never considered them a threat till now!!! She was right beside me but not facing me, good thing she cried so I looked at her, I completely freaked and tried yanking it out just like you did but it wouldn't come out. What made it even worse was that I couldnt even see her face she was backwards and I kept pulling I hurt her even more. When the thing was finally out she was out of breath, she turned blue, she chocked and vomitted mucus mixed with blood, I guess cuz I hurt her. It was a real nightmare. She cried for 5 min and forgot about it but I kept weeping and panicking for 2 hours. I still can't get over this scene from last night. This is my second child and I thought I had seen it all. I expect the worst always and try to protect them from anything but as it turns out you never know what could be potentially harmful. It was absolutely impossible to call an ambulance or go to the ER, but she seems to be doing fine today eating and playing. I hope I didn't do much damage after all but the feeling of guilt is horrible. Anyways I was searching the net wondering if anyone else has ever had such a crazy experience and it felt better that I was not the only one. Take care. By the way my daughter is 24 months, 3 months premature.
  • I would have done the same thing. My daughter always plays with hangers. I won't be letting her play with them anymore.
