November 2011 Moms

nbr completely, okay it is lol

Lil man is ten months today... almost everyday I think about how I came about giving him his name and the spelling. His name is Kohan Andrew Paul. Kohan is because my dad's favorite singer up until he died was Leonard Cohen... I always knew, even while my dad was still alive, if and when I had a son, his name would be Cohen and the middle name would be Andrew. Andrew was dad's middle name and I felt it to be too popular as a first name... as for Cohen, I knew it wasn't popular but I still wanted it spelt differently. As for Paul, that's DH's and FIL's middle name and is a family name, so we had to use it. Anyways, I guess I'm just missing my dad, he's been gone for 2 years, 8 months, 13 days. I hurt knowing he never got a chance to meet his grandson, he would've been head over heels in love with him. I was his only child, basically cause he adopted my brother but still played favorites with us. Kohan would have been his first grandbaby... anyhow, thanks for reading, just having a hard night and no one to talk to atm. Also, I'd love to hear about how your baby got his or her name!

Re: nbr completely, okay it is lol

  • I'm sorry for the loss of your father.

We were originally going to name DD Autumn because this time of the year is really special for DH and I. We met in the fall, got engaged in he fall and married October 20th, 2007.  I was still open to suggestions from DH because while we really liked the name Autumn, and still do, we really wanted to love our child's name and have it be unique.

We started looking at German and Czech names because that is our background as a couple. Most of those names were either wretched or not what we really wanted. Then we moved to Anglo-Saxon and found Elene (pronounced like Helene, but obviously without the H). It reminded DH of Tolkein's Elvish language, which derived from Welsh mostly. We found a small dictionary online of Tolkein Elvish prefixes and suffixes used for names. Elo- means "star" and -wen/-wyn means "maiden." at first I wasn't sold on the name. I was scared that people would think it was too out there even though I really did like the sound and flow and even the way it looks written out. I asked my mom and close friends and got their opinions. I even asked the BNB on TB. My thoughts eased, but I also realized that's just plain loved the name no matter what people thought and I loved that she would be the only Elowyn around. :-)

    Phew! That was a novel.

  • I'm sorry for the loss of your father. Your son will be so proud to carry such a meaningful name!

Our first choice for a girls name was Evelyn because I love the nickname Evie, and I just think it's a beautiful name. We did a little more research and finally decided on Ava Louise, which I like because it still sounds similar to Evie. Louise is my grandmothers and my greatgreat grandmothers middle name. We were team green, and our boy name was Logan Peter. Logan because DH likes wolverine from XMen, and Peter is my FIL's name.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I can't even imagine. What a lucky little boy to have such a strong connection with him.

My husband had a boys name picked out long before we even started dating. While dating he said I had to be okay with it for our first son's name. Luckily it's not horrible and it's really grown on me. Bradley is for my FIL and David is for my MIL's dad (so DH's grandpa). David also happens to be my DH's middle name as well.

We can't seem to agree on anything though for the next children. Our girl option was Madelyn Michelle but there are so many Madison/Madelyn variations now that I'm not to set on it anymore. DH actually suggested the name Leia (like from Starwars!) as an actual option for next time. Confused Our next baby probably won't have a name until we absolutely have to pick one.

  • I'm so sorry for the loss of your father, your little man has such a wonderful, meaningful name and I'm sure he will be very proud of it when he grows up!

As for DD we actually didn't even have a name picked out. (Our boy name was easy, after my grandfather and FI's dad... girl name gave us trouble) Well at first we were dead set on Charlotte and I still absolutely love the name and we were going to call her Charly, I liked it, thought it was cute! That was up until everyone started calling her Charly and I never heard Charlotte, and I realized she would never be called Charlotte at that point and that irked me so I vetoed the name after about a month. Then came Ava and Lorelei, and our list grew from there. So we had a list of about 4 names, about 2 weeks before DD was born FI and I each added a name to the list that the other one hated. Daphne was my name, I just saw it and fell in love. Maya was his name, he had a dream that we named her Maya. A couple hours into labor I just absolutely knew her name would be Maya butttt I kept it a secret until right after I gave birth (I like to think of it as our first little secret) and FI was so happy and proud and it just fit her so perfectly! Marie is her MN, she shares it with both FI's mom ad two sisters.

Oh and funny thing, I practically lived with the baby name book attached to my hand from the time we found out it was a girl and looked up every meaning to every name, except Maya. So a few weeks after she was born I was curious and I looked it up, the name actually means "of an illusion or dream" which I think is hilarious because FI dreamed that we would name her that!

  • So sorry to hear about the loss of your father.

We named LO Grayson McKinley. The first name has no direct meaning for us. We both just loved the name and it was one of the only names that we could agree on. We also debated on Ezra as the first name. For his middle name I wanted something Irish and we ended up deciding on McKinley. It's very similar to my mother's maiden name and I have always been really close to my mother's family.

  • OP, I'm so sorry about your dad, and that you're feeling sad. My dad passed unexpectedly more than 7 years ago - I was 19 and he was only 52. I'll always miss him and feel sad that he never got to meet his granddaughter or my DH. If and when we have a boy, his middle name will be David, after my dad.

  • I read kaeldra in a book called dragons milk a good 11 or 12 years ago. I've always wanted to name my daughter that. I had a hard time deciding on a middle name, most of the names I liked were long or ended in the same sound. I decided on lynn because it sounded so good together and it's my sisters middle name. Later on we found out that its my bil's SO's middle name too. The only sad thing is that I don't remember the other names I had considered.

Rory was on my short list of names because of Gilmore Girls too!!  But, DH said no, he always makes fun of me for my obsession with that show!

OP so sorry you're missing you're dad, but it's so great that you get to honor him with your sons name!!

Zoe Lee - Zoe came from a girl in my group when I was a day camp counselor in college.  She was the definition of what I would want my future daughter to be.  Then I met a few more Zoe's while teaching swimming lessons, and they were all the same way.  It was like it was meant to be.  Lee came from my maternal grandmother and DH's paternal grandfather.  His grandfather passed away a couple months before we found out I was pregnant.  At his funeral I saw his middle name for the first time, and it was Lee, the same name as my Grannie, at that moment I knew that, boy or girl, our first childs middlename would be Lee.  Both families were overjoyed to hear the name.  My Grannie is still around, but has the very late stages of Alzheimers, we went to visit her this summer, and everytime she heard my uncles say, "mom this is your great granddaughter Zoe Lee" her face woudl get this little smirk and she would say, well now isn't that a wonderful name, and she'd wink.  It made my day everytime i heard it!!  Which was about a dozen times a day!!

  • Sorry you are having a rough time, OP. I hope you're in better spirits soon.

Antonia came from my Uncle Anton or Tony as we called him. He died when I was young, but I have always felt a special connection to him. I also have several other family members with the name Anton. MH didn't really like the name Antonia, but loved Toni so it works and Antonia has grown on him.

Joy was inspired by my Mom's middle name, Joyce. She hates the name Joyce so I shortened it to Joy which fits my happy girl to a tee.

I think Antonia Joy has a very nice flow to it especially with our very common last name. Our deal is we agree on the first name then the middle name comes from my family since the baby gets his last name.

  • Sorry to hear of your loss and how you are hurting.  I'm glad you have your son to carry on something he loved.

My DD2's name is Harper.  She was going to be Leah up until I was about 8 months pregnant but we weren't 100% set on it. I asked my opinionated husband if he liked the name Harper. He said he loved it because one of his favorite books is To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee.  Her middle name is his family's (his Pop Pop's) surname.

I'm already thinking of #3, if that ever happens, and Leah is still on the list. As is Leo if it's a boy.  hehe
