Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your LO learn to hold hands?

DS will be 14 months in a couple of days.  He won't hold my hand...I try to get him to when we are walking and he throws a major fit.  He loves to go down my inlaws two steps to go from their kitchen to their living room and I try to hold his hands while going down the steps and he gets mad.  It's like he wants to do it all on his own and be mister independent.

He was never a baby that would let me hold his hands to walk around the house, either.  I always tried before he was a walker to do the finger walk or hold hands and walk and he never would.

When did your LO's start holding hands?  Or do I just have a very independent child who doesn't want help?

  • I honestly don't remember. DS has held my hand from when he was just standing until when he started walking. When he first started walking, I had trouble keeping him with me when we would be out. He wanted to explore. Now he stays with me and holds my hand wherever we are.

  • DD started when she was learning to walk. Then she started using it as a way to make me go wherever she wants to go. I'd say in the last month or so she has learned to go where I say when I grab a hold of her hand.

  • I can't remember for sure but it has been a few months. Sounds like your LO just enjoys doing things on his own Smile
  • She's held my hand since she started walking. I dunno, I just made her do it when we were walking in a parking lot or up stairs.

  • My LO does not like to hold my hand. She just started walking about 3 weeks ago and I think it is hard for her to balance while holding my hand. We are working on it though because clearly it is something she needs to learn.
  • Ds probably started around 13 months and likes to hold my hand at times however he will to the tantrum thing and not want to hold my hand because he wants to be a big boy or whatever, I let him do his own thing he is very independent I just tell him he has to follow or I grab his hand and drag him like 12 steps then he starts walking with me again holding. My hand. He can now go down stairs by himself so he likes to practice that he gets excited and super happy with himself when he does something himself that he gives a big smile and laugh and claps his hands

  • For the most part my lil 16 mo old is fairly independent and won't hold someone's hand for to long.  I try and enforce it mostly around stairs, if he wants to cross the street or we were walking in a store.  If he doesn't hold one of our hands, then he gets carried (and cries) or he has to sit in a stroller/shopping cart

DS liked to hold hands when he was learning to walk, and then suddenly he went through a long independent phase. Just this week, it was like a switch went off and he willingly holds hands again. I think he finally figured out in public, his choices are hold a parent's hand or be carried.
    this is totally us.

Yep, us too. One of us will hold out our hand and if she doesn't comply, she's in our arms and she doesn't want that at this point so she now just automatically reaches for our hand w/out a fight.

  • He has always held my hand, but he will also sit down if he decides he doesn't want to walk where I'm leading him.

  • My DS sounds so much like yours. He just in the last couple months started now he takes me places like the fridge if he wants something to drink. He was 1920 months when he started but he still likes to do everything on his own.

  • DD has been walking for about five months, and I can never get her to hold my hand.  She never hung onto us when learning to walk, and she's not interested in starting now!  I think it's an independence thing, she just wants to explore.  I just let her go for now.

  • DD is very independent and doesn't love holding hands. Now that she can walk herself to the playground and we don't always have to take the stroller, holding hands is imperative when we cross the street. We taught her how to hold hands about a month ago at 18 months - it took her a few days to really get that she had to do it in the street - but now she lifts her hand for us to grab.
