Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

need advice

There are 3 things I need to wean my 16 mo from in the hopefully near future, and unfortunately they all effect the other and I don't know which to do first or where to start....

Pacifier
Nursing
Night waking/eating/drinking

She goes through spurts of sleeping well; will only wake once every couple nights, then its back to waking 2 or 3 times a night and only going to sleep again after nursing.
I had started to cut out her morning nursing session in the hopes of taking out a nursing session a week to wean her in about a month... but then she started one of the waking multiple times at night things.
And I talked with her pedi at her last appointment about the paci and she said that it is much harder to wean a 2 year old from it than at her age, but also it might not be a good idea to wean her of that and nursing at the same time because it wouldn't be good to disrupt her that much all at once. But when she wakes up at night she throws her paci out of the crib and then cries and won't go back to sleep without it.... and then when she gets that back she just wants to nurse.
Ugh. I just don't know where to start. Can anyone give me any advice?

Re: need advice

  • Pacifier- DS never had one, but I would just go cold turkey, or only use it at night, then cold turkey

Nursing-I dropped a feeding a week, once I decided it was time to wean (13m for us)

Night waking/eating/drinking- I would just stop going in the room when LO wakes up. If you know LO is eating enough during the day, there is no reason to get up at night. We started this around 6m and DS goes back to sleep easily now that he know we will not be coming in his room at night.

  • Thank you both.

These last 5 nights or so I have stopped going into her room when she wakes at night. It has been miraculous! Last night she didn't even wake up. I don't know why I waited so long to do it. lol

I am going to start cutting out a feeding a week starting next week (we are going out of town this week and I don't want to start now and undue anything progress by messing up her normal routine while we are away). Then I will do the paci. I just decided I wanted her to still have that to comfort her while we are going through the weaning process.
