New furntiure for DD1 before/after DD2 comes?

I want DD1's new room set up before the baby gets here because I'm really trying to minimize change for her as much as possible, and I want to make a big deal of DD1's new big girl furniture and have her adjust to it before the baby is here and we're all focused on her.

DH seems to think it doesn't matter and she'll adjust fine and is getting all pissy with me.

Am I crazy for rushing to get everything done before the baby comes?  My RCS is scheduled for 10/8 and right now her new furniture will be here on 10/3, and I'm hoping to get the bed sometime early next week.

  • Is she excited about it?  If she's excited, I personally would wait for after the baby's born that way you can make a big exciting deal that now that she's a big sis she gets new furniture.

If she's not excited then do it before so that it's not the baby's fault for making her get new furniture.

  • I was told by many people and read in books to make the changes at least 3 months before the baby comes.  You don't want your older child to feel like they are being kicked out of their room/crib just because the baby is coming and needs those things.  Even if your child is super excited about the baby and the big kid furniture, it makes sense to have those 2 things as separate as possible.  If the furniture is arriving a week before baby, I would not make the change until later - the baby can sleep in a pack in play or a bassinet for a little bit.  Or you can always put the new room together and ask DD1 if she wants to try sleeping in the new room/new bed but if she says no, don't push it at that point.  Follow her lead but getting it set up is totally fine.  A new baby is a ton of change but moving into a big girl bed is huge as well for your DD.

  • I agree, do it later.  She is comfortable, the baby doesn't care if his clothes are in nice furniture or plastic bins.

Having a sibling is a big adjustment, but I found when the twins started crawling and getting into her stuff DD was put out by them.  Before they were toys, and cute, and at worst minor nuisances.  But when they started crawling it was shaky as to whether she was going to let us keep them.  Something big like that in your pocket may be a neat way through her adjustment period  to take attention away from the baby and focus on her and only her.

  • I updated the furniture too, before DS was born.  I ordered it and had to push DH to make decisions, and I am glad we did.  It took 2.5 months to come.  We set up her new big girl bed in December and my DS was born in February.  I really wanted to minimize all the changes.  I feel it helped her to adjust, it helped me because I was nesting like crazy, and after the baby was born, I just didn't have the time.
