firmness of bed for LO?

Anyone know what sort of firmness we should get for DD's twin sized bed?  she's currently in a toddler bed using the toddler side of her mattress.  the guy in the store said we should go for soft and cushy becuase it's better for them since they grow when they sleep, but who knows if he really knows what he's talking about.

what do you have for your LO?

Re: firmness of bed for LO?

  • Ours is fairly firm with a plastic cover over it, with a soft mattress pad on top of that. We had it before she was born, so she got what we had. I've never heard about the soft and growing thing before.

  • DD sleeps on a pillowtop I've had around for a spare bed for years, so I didn't spend time in a store picking a mattress specially for her.  I don't understand why a softer bed would be SAFER because kids grow in their sleep.  It's not like a harder bed would push them out of bed while they grow.  I don't think kids really care one way or another - DD seems comfortable sleeping on the floor with only a soft blanket for cushioning and on the softer foam mattress in the master BR.
