I tried to stunt my son's emotional growth but he wouldn't take a pacifier. Instead he spent most of his first year screaming and crying in my ear. Not very empathetic if you ask me.

You guys aren't missing much. The title says it all. Another ridiculous study. Correlation does not equal causation, blah, blah, etc. The end.
I hate that the media always ignores that. These articles always bury the part where the researcher says they're looking into causation at the very, very bottom. The media's misrepresentation gives researchers a bad name.

We are all going to screw our kids up one way or another. I've just accepted that & made life easier on myself.
Whenever my kid poops I tell him he is a naughty child and that it is concentrated evil coming out of his ass. That is probably worse than the pacifier he used to use.

I can't even find enough info on this study to properly critique it. All I can find is a press release. I went to the website of the journal it's supposedly published in, and it's not there. Maybe I'm doing the internets wrong today.

There's often lag time between press release, physical publication, and internet publication. The journal isn't amazing, but it's a good school. This is the researcher: https://psych.wisc.edu/niedenthal/

I wasn't posting this as a valid set of studies. It was just on my Yahoo feed this morning. I was laughing at how ridiculous it was. The lead author of the study at one point even says the emotional intelligence is a "girlie thing". Also the journal it was published in was Tuesday's issue so it might not be available in the archives only to people who have subscribed.

Gotcha. Yeah, it sounds ridic to me. I was just questioning the validity of the study out of habit because it's what I do at work every day, lol.

Wow! Where did she say that?

?It could be that parents are inadvertently compensating for girls using the pacifier because they want their girls to be emotionally sophisticated,? Niedenthal said. ?That?s a girlie thing.?
This quote is from the below article. I am sure this is somehow taked out of context though. As we all know the media loves to do that.

Oh, cool, what do you do?
I'm a medical writer, so I sift through dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles every day. I get paid to read and critically assess sources of info, essentially. I can't complain about it too much.

That sounds like interesting work, it must be fun at times.
I'm a research analyst, so I apologize for all the shiity work you have to sort through!

Ha, you feel my pain, then! I work closely with research analysts. Solidarity, yo.
Awesome. Another thing to worry/feel guilty about. It is amazing that anyone turns out ok.
Don't really worry or stress about it. I posted this because I think it is ridiculous. I think conveying and demonstrating empathy as a parent has much more influence on your child's future emotional growth than using a pacifier does.
Re: Sucks I stunted my son's emotional growth
Lol. It may.
Or you know, it may not. Whatever.

lol, I was going to say this.
A lil emotional damage from a paci is the least of his problems.

Yeah, I'm trying to screw DS up in the most fun ways possible, at least then he'll have a good time in the process.

Yeah, probably worse.
