Switching Preschools....have much of a talk would you have?

Hi Ladies,

We have made the decision that we are going to go ahead and switch preschools. I want to make sure the transition is smooth and DS doesn't feel that we are taking him away from something.

How and what would you say to your LO if you were taking him out of one school and putting him in another?

  • Mommy and Daddy's number one job is to keep you safe and healthy.  Going to school is a big boy thing that you need to do now.  You are going to start going to ___ school now because that's where we think you will be safest and healthiest.

But frankly I wouldn't send him to the old school at all anymore.  If he asks why I would simply say something vague like there are more grown ups or something.  And if he starts getting sidetracked about the bad school, I would get animated and excited and start imagining what new toys are in his NEW classroom.

  • I think that really depends on your child and how they handle change.  If he is the type of kid that stresses over things, I would until the last min but if he is a child that thrives and does well with new things and won't stress over it - go for it.  My younger DD knew 6 months before she was leaving daycare to start her PreK program but we didn't tell my older DD when she made the change until a few days before her last day at the daycare - right around the time we were going to visit the new classroom.

  • And I agree with the PP about not going back to the old school - not worth it based on the things you have said. Make a clean break - figure out what to do with your son between now and the day he can start the new school but do not go back to that old school - to me that would just add way more stress onto your son.
