Preemies

teeth

When did your preemie start getting teeth?  When did you first take them to the dentist?

My DD who is almost 11 months/ 7.5 adjusted has no sign of teeth yet.  I know micropreemies often have late eruption, enamel and palate issues and she is definitely at risk these things from being so small and vented for so long.  Just curious about what to expect.

Re: teeth

  • My 33.5 weeker got teeth at 5 months! His 2 front for Christmas actually ;) At 14 months (actual) he now has 10 teeth, and is cutting his molars on bottom.. He got teeth really early though so I don't think thats the norm, especially for a preemie!

Our pedi said we don't have to worry about the dentist until 2-3 years old.

  • My DD was a 28 weeker who was IUGR and measuring like a 25 weeker.  She was 1 lb 11 oz.  I remember that she started showing signs of cutting teeth LONG before they actually broke the surface (like months) but I can't remember exactly when they started showing.

Re: First Dentist Visit - What I will say is that there is conflicting information about when they should first visit the dentist.  I *think* the ADA now says 1 year, and some dentists say this too, but others say 2 - 3 years old.  DD just had her first dental exam yesterday at the age of 4.75+ (she'll be 5 in November, but we didn't take her until now because of an insurance problem).  Her dentist didn't bat an eye at it and didn't seem the least concerned that we hadn't been in before.  I would have preferred going in much sooner and I consider us to be very lucky that her micropreemie teeth have held up very well!

I would just ask your dentist (or the pediatric dentist you plan on using if your insurance allows it - ours doesn't - boooooo!) when they suggest.

  • My oldest didn't get her first tooth until 10-11 months, I definitely remember her having teeth (2 bottom) at a year old. We didn't actually take her to the dentist until about a month ago. She will be three in a few weeks. Our dentist wanted to see her at three. I think each dentist is different, I would check with yours.

  • My guy didn't end up getting teeth until he was 14 months old. He's 21 months now and still only has six! Though the drooling has started up again so we might be getting more soon. No one seems concerned at all though.
