We also prefer the food route vs. supplement, and use ground flax seed in a lot of things (found usually in the organic section of the grocery store). My kids also love walnuts, soybeans, and fish.
While we do try to eat healthily and my kids to like fish, it's hard to get enough just from food. We do supplement. For my toddler I use Carlson liquid DHA supplement. you can order it online. My pharmacist sister did a bunch of research the first time around to make sure it was safe, pure, etc.
So I take the pills and did through both pregnancies, my 5 year old takes the chewables one (she loves it), and the toddler is on the liquid. I do refrigerate mine and toddlers becuase of the whole fishy burp issue. Doesn't seem to bother the 5 year old. I just give the toddler some a few times a week.
Re: DHA supplement?
Just our personal preference -- would rather get it from food than supplement it.
So, anything fish or adding ground flaxseed to smoothies/oatmeal will give LO all the DHA needed.
DS is against meat and i've only tried fish once and he just did not want it. where did you find ground flaxseed?
You can also get Horizon DHA-fortified milk (and other dairy products).
My DD loves seafood, so she gets hers from there.
