Natural Birth

Birthing Options

At what point do you talk to your OB about what you want while in labor? I have a short cervix and am on strict bed rest and progesterone. I'm not sure if people with my condition have needed any other medical intervention while in labor.  He hasn't mentioned me having to have C-Section or anything and lately I've been thinking about wanting to do it med-free if all works out that way. When should we start discussing this potential plan? Also, would love to hear from anyone who was high risk that went med free.

Re: Birthing Options

  • I brought up my birth plan at my 24 week appointment, I think.  We had discusses things before that point as well.  I would recommend bringing it up as soon as possible.  GL!

  • I brought it up tonight with my midwife at a routine appointment.  She said to bring in my birth plan as soon as possible so that the practice can look it over and discuss any questions they may have.  I hired a doula and will sit down and write it out with her and then present it to my practice at some point.  My birth plan is relatively simple though and my doula is amazing so I am not worried.
  • I worked with a MW, and she started discussing my birth preferences around 20 weeks. We'd just discuss one or two ideas at each visit. I found this really good because often we'd discuss something and then later on I'd have another question about it and so had plenty of time to revisit it.

So I'd start discussions with your OB now. See what his stance is on various things, if any aspect of your situation affects your options for natural birth etc etc etc.

You don't have to discuss the entire plan in detail in one appointment. But just get the ball rolling.
