CIO - now or wait?

It looks like I am going to be brave and try CIO.  I think it's our only option at this point, since DD is 17 months, still waking every night and won't stop until I go in and sleep with her on the big bed in her room.  Im literally at the point of exhaustion.  so, my question is... do we start this now (i.e., tonight) or when we get back from vacation?  DH and I are going away for 8 days, without DD, in 2 weeks.  She will be sleeping at MIL the first 4 nights and my mom's the next 4 nights.  I would hate it if we did this now and then needed to do it all over again when we get back.  Thoughts??

  • I would do it tonight. If it works, great, you've got the next 2 weeks to catch up on some sleep and hopefully it will carry over to your parents. You may have to do it again (I do every time we take a vacation), but it doesn't take as long as it will the first time.

  • I don't suppose the grandma's can sleep at your house so she's in her own bed?

I wouldn't want to do CIO twice but I wouldn't want to inflict my poorly sleeping child on my mom either. Do you think your mom and MIL are just going to put her to sleep with them or do you think they'll try in her own space? (What is her own space? Do they each have a crib?)

They could sleep at our house while we're away but since they're doing us this favor, we didn't want to "inconvenience" them (although they would do anything in the world as long as they can be with DD, lol).  My in-laws and my mom watch her every day while we're working so they know her very well.  She's also slept over both their houses a few times (in cribs...., or so I'm told, lol).  At my in-laws, she totally sleeps through the night from about 9pm - 7am (I get so jealous hearing that) but wakes up a lot at my mom's.  I think they are able to put her in her crib right away when she gets tired.

I wonder if by waiting to try CIO, she will be used to us not coming in for her in the middle of the night and when we get back, it'll be that much easier (?).  I'm torn.

This is one reason why I may want to try now - so it carries over to them while we're away,  Good to know it gets easier.  Hmmmm...

  • We were in the same situation. Every time my mom watches DS he sleeps through the night., Only once he woke and she had to lay in the bed with him for 2 min and then she put him back in his pack n play.

I would sleep train now and then re-train if you have to when you come back. She will probably catch on sooner the 2nd time around.

We are in the middle of sleep training right now. I was surprised the first couple nights he woke and put himself back to sleep within 5 minutes. I think i get him more awake and stimulated by going in his room everytime.

    Good Luck!

  • Agree try now! If you were going this weekend I would say to wait, but two weeks is pretty far off. You might have to retrain but it should only take one night I would think. The key will be to go right to it on the first night home no slipping into old habits. Good luck!!

I vote this option. We had to do CIO for DS at the same age. I say start now, have a plan and stick with it. It worked even at this age! GL.

  • I agree now would be best. And let gmoms know to stick to your routine, whatever that may be. LO may fuss at their house too the first night but if the routine is set in place and is working they will have the confidence to stick to it too.

If CIO works well (it did for us) I would ask the grandmas to sleep at your house.
