PERSISTENT diaper rash...Help

I have the prescription Nystatin (I think that's what it's called) and I'm applying it several times a day.

It seems worse on Mondays and gets worse throughout the week.  They say they change him a LOT at daycare and I can see from the sheet that they usually do.  They have been using the cream as well.

I can't seem to get rid of it!  It flared up again with a TON of little red dots on DS's bum around the hole yesterday.  It's so sad!  Any tricks to get rid of it?  I can't let him sleep naked, we co-sleep, although that has been suggested to me.

  • Take him to the pedi ASAP! Could be more than a diaper rash like staph.

  • When DS had terrible yeast rash, the doctor gave him a combo of nystatin and hydrocortisone. It worked well, and the rash was completely gone within a week.

  • go to the doctor again.  We had strep diaper rash in addition to yeast.  Also, check again with daycare.  Do they keep a log of how often they are changing?  With yeast/strep I changed every 1.5 hours.

  • Have you considered that it might be an allergic reaction?  I'd start logging everything she eats to see what correlation there might be.  Since you say it's worse on Mondays, I'd focus first on what you're feeding over the weekend that she's not getting at daycare.

  • I had this problem on and off for almost a yr.  It turned out that it was not yeast or even a true diaper rash.  It was a reaction to either the diapers or wipes. We finally switched to huggies naturals, and use 7th generation wipes (hard to find--we get on amazon).  Since using this combo it is gone.  Once in a while she gets a rash, but it is seldom.  Both were recommendations from the pedi after dealing with this for so long.  Also, be generous with desitin, and have daycare apply at each diaper change.  They do for us.

  • I was told to use baking soda in the bath when DS had a diaper rash. I really don't know if it helped or not, but it's worth a shot.
  • I think it just takes awhile.  It took us two tubes of nystatin and about 8 weeks to get DD's yeast rash to go away for good. We put regular diaper cream (triple paste) on top of it. You should keep applying for at least a week even after you think it's gone.

  • DS1 had the worst rash when he switched from formula to whole milk. The way we got around the "letting it air out" was to only use mild soap to wash the bottom at diaper changes and then a cool setting hairblow dryer on the bottom and then a fresh diaper. The cool setting hairblow dryer had the same affect as letting him run around nude for hours. They may not be able to do that at daycare but you could do that at home in the evenings and in the morning.

  • ou may want to look into what LO is eating....mine gets a rash with straight bananas...also we noticed a rash after her first piece of cake at her bday party...the diaper rash turned into yeast infection...used the nystatin and cleared it up...but Dr mentioned foods like citrus, milk transition, blueberries can on some babies cause rash.
  • Ditto the allergy. DD got bad diaper rash from strawberries.
