April 2012 Moms

DevonPow

We are going to Boston tomorrow for the day and I was wondering if you have any suggestions for what to do. I've pretty much only been told Freedom Trail and Fanneuil hall.. Good places to park? Eat with a baby? Best place for a cupcake? Any great children's consignment shops? I appreciate any help, if you have time!

Re: DevonPow

  • I would suggest taking the T as much as possible to avoid having to find parking. The Science Museum and Children's Museum are both great. Not sure about the others.

  • Sure! Unfortunately it is supposed to rain tomorrow :( What area are you planning to be?

  • Can I take the T with baby in Ergo?

I have no clue what area but I think the only thing we definitely want to do is the freedom trail. We are coming up from Rhode Island. We are only living here until the spring so we're realizing we need to figure out what Boston has to offer!

  • If it is the morning and not raining yet I always like the Public Gardens - you can take the baby on the swan boats, to the Make Way for Ducklings statue, etc. You can easily walk to Charles Street for some shopping (Red Wagon is a cute children's boutique there) and Beacon Hill for eating or just wlk to Newbury Street for better shopping (Mulberry Road is a great kids store there) and a million restaurants....I like Atlantic fish for easy, good seafood. Slightly nicer but still kid friendly.

Alternately, you can go to the Waterfront - DS1 loved the aquarium at this age. You can walk along the harbor past the ICA and eat at the new Harborside legal Sea Food, or the Mexican restaurant right next to it that I can't recall the name of (a little trendy in that thir menus are iPads - which I find ridiculous - but they have good guacamole and great margaritas with a great view).

  • Definitely on taking the T with the baby in the carrier - strollers are a PITA on the T! If you do the Freedom Trail you start on Boston Common (next to the Public Garden so you can run over there easily if you want). You can stop for lunch at the Faneuil Hall/waterfront area - there is another Legal Sea Food there right across from the Aquarium, or I also like Sel de la Terre. Then you head to the North End (get some cannoli at Mike's Pastry - others will argue that it is touristy and other places have better cannoli. But I disagree). The last mile of the trail takes you to Charlestown and the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill....both good sites but I say skip it just because it is a long way there and back for only those 2 things, and if you wnt more shopping and eating there is more elsewhere.

  • Oh, and I believe Georgetown Cupcakes opened on Newbury Street, but I haven't been yet

  • These are all great suggestions-thank you!  I did hear of Newbury Street before so we'll definitely check it out.  I didn't think of the aquarium yet for DS.

Bummer about the rain...I checked earlier and I thought it said just rain during the evening but I'll have to check again.  DH actually took off Tues-Thurs so maybe there's another day we could go.

    Thanks for your help!

  • Oh man, now I want a Mike's Pastry cannoli so, so bad.  I love Boston! If you have time, totally take the red line to Harvard Square.  So cool! Awesome bookshops!

When I was there for 2 weeks last summer, my mom came.  We purchased tickets for a hop on/hop off bus.  Totally worth it.  I had seen everything before, but it was a great way for my mom to see the city.

  • oh man...I know tomorrow has both cannoli and cupcakes on the menu...
