Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Re-using LO#1 crib for #2

We are thinking about moving DS to a toddler bed or twin bed and having #2 use the crib. DH is convinced that you cannot use the same mattress for the second baby that we used for the first. DS is currently still using the crib so it's not like it's been in storage for years. He has of course spit up in the bed and had some leaky diapers. I change the sheets every week (if not sooner for a mess) and wipe down the mattress with a clorox wipe with each change. Am I crazy for not wanting to get a new mattress? Anyone have experience either way?

  • When we have #2 we will not get a new mattress.  The one we have is perfectly fine.

  • I don't see why you would need a new mattress. We're using the same crib and mattress for DD and buying DS a toddler bed. We have always used a mattress cover between the mattress and sheet.

  • DD is going straight to a big bed when we have number 2. It's low to the ground and I already own it, so no toddler bed here.

It never occurred to me not reuse the crib mattress for number 2. What could possibly be wrong with a mattress a 22 pound kid slept on for less than 2 years? I'll scrub it up, air it out, flip it over and call it a day.

If I was doing a toddler bed, I might get a new mattress for number. Just becuase that mattress is already DD1s and it's what she knows. I'd have to buy a new one anyways.

  • We got a hand me down toddler bed and mattress, so when we moved DD1 that's what she got. We kept the crib mattress in the crib and used both for DD2. I really don't see why you couldn't re-use the mattress.

  • DS went right into the crib when DD moved into a bigger bed... Same mattress. This will happen again with 3. Most crib matresses are water resistant and can be wiped clean with disinfectant. I'd only be concerned if the mattress is split open anywhere, as germs, etc can fester and grow.

  • We will re-use the mattress.

  • I would definitely use the same mattress too. I don't see the big deal. You could always take it out and clean it a big, let it air in the sun and be set too.

  • I would definitely re-use.  Buy one of those mattress pads that zips over the whole mattress.  We have one on now and just wash that every few weeks (sheets as often as needed).  They are about $20 and keep the mattress clean and dry.

  • I would reuse the mattress unless its in bad shape for some reason. However, if you go with a toddler bed most of them use the same size as the crib mattress so you will need 2 crib mattresses anyways???

  • When Nick was born, Tim went into a full and Nick got the mattress. I couldn't justify buying a new one.

  • I would reuse it. I'm not having anymore but if I did I would especially since we use a mattress cover.
  • As long as you've used a mattress cover it should be fine.

  • I think that's crazy, I would definitely use the same one.  If you get a toddler bed you'll have to get another one anyone, so just use the new one for the baby and put DS' in his toddler bed, but if you get him a twin...yeah, keep the mattress.

  • DD uses the crib and mattress from her big brother.  We got a new mattress pad... And new sheets (only got new sheets because she was a girl and we wanted to throw in some oink, but I use some of DS' sheets as well)

  • I don't know why you would need a new mattress as long as there isn't anything wrong with it, like a hole or if one of the springs broke or something. We have a hand me down mattress that has been three two other kids, and it's just fine.

  • They are all waterproof no?  And like others said, if you used mattress covers there's no reason to get a new one.  I'm about to use the same one for #3 that I used for #1 & #2.

  • That never even crossed my mind. DD uses same crib, same mattress. Works perfectly :)

  • Thanks ladies! I thought it was totally fine.  #2 will be born when DS is 23 months so we would have had the mattress for just over 2 years. It's not in bad shape. There are no holes or rips. There aren't any stains. Like I said, I clean it!

I think we will get DS a twin bed and have the baby use the crib. It's not like DS is going to want to be in the crib forever.

  • DS's crib mattress was a hand-me-down from his cousin. It is covered with vinyl and I wipe it down every time I change the sheets. I have no problem with reusing a crib mattress.

Toddler beds use crib mattresses. I just started transitioning DS to a toddler bed so we can use the crib for #2. I had to buy a 2nd mattress anyway so I moved his crib mattress to the toddler bed and will use the new mattress for #2. If you get a toddler bed instead of a twin bed, you can do the same thing to avoid the argument with your DH.

  • We DEFINITELY did not get a new mattress. Never even crossed my mind.

  • We did not get a new mattress.  All 3 of our kids have slept on our crib mattress.

However, there has been a link made at some point between used mattresses and SIDS, but I'm guessing your DH did not reference that connection.  You can google the connection, but if I recall correctly the study found that there was a higher instance of SIDS with kids sleeping on a used mattress.  The SIDS risk increased when it was a used mattress from outside the home (i.e., neighbor) and was lower when from inside the home (i.e., sibling)
